I'm so sorry that the end of "Between Shades of Gray" made you cry. I cried writing it. :(

In terms of what inspired me to write it - much of the world is not aware that Stalin deported countless people to Siberia. I wanted to write the book to create an awareness and also give voice to the people who never had a chance to tell their story.
