Maria asked Tim Butcher:

We were recently told at writing retreat, that writers shouldn't wait for inspiration, they should just write, every day all the time, making it a habit. Do you have a "Muse" ?

Tim Butcher As with so many things in life, one gets better at writing the more one does it. So once you have the idea/frame/inspiration, don't shy away from writing. The first versions might be awful, the narrative arc difficult to decipher, the characters weak but you can take strength from one certainty: it will all get better the more you work at it. So get it down, clumsy linking paragraph after muddled metaphor. And when you turn to it later, the true work of improving will be much, much easier. You cannot polish air. Give yourself something and no matter how dull it can be made to shine.
