Yes, I wrote a few manuscripts before "Between Shades of Gray." They were humorous books for younger readers and actually the humor wasn't appropriate to publish! :)
For writing dialogue, imagine that you're watching the characters, as if you're watching a movie. Sit at your laptop and imagine the characters speaking and simply type out what you hear them say. Then read the dialogue out loud to make certain it sounds natural and flows easily.
