Hi Ruta, I am a very big fan of "Between Shades of Gray" and enjoyed it from the beginning to end. What inspired you to write Between Shades of Gray? What inspired you to write Out of the Easy?

Hello!
I'm interested in WWII because my father was affected and involved. My father fled from Lithuania as a young boy and some of his extended family was deported to Siberia. That inspired "Between Shades of Gray." My father himself was a displaced refugee for nine years and that partially inspired "Salt to the Sea."
My mother's story inspired me to write "Out of the Easy." Like Josie, my mother had to navigate a very difficult childhood. She triumphed and her spirit and experience helped me create the character of Josie Moraine.
Thanks for asking!

Hi Ruta! I finished "Salt to the Sea" this weekend and I don't know if I'll ever recover from it. The characters will stuck with me forever. I have to ask: Did Florian meet his sister again? And Joana? Did she found her mother? Also, I was reading some reviews on internet, and I was a little shocked that some people think of Albert as a villain. For me, he was just naïve and a victim too. What do you think about him?

Hi Ruta! I read your book "Between Shades of Gray" and absolutely fell in love with it. I am a middle school student of South Korea, also a wannabe author - trying to get as much practice as possible when I still have time as a young student. Could you give me some help about turning a general idea into a book(or a rough draft, if not)? I would be absolutely thankful if you can!
