I have an ongoing list of 20+ ideas for novels. Whenever I finish a book, my agent and I decide together what I'll write next. Once it's decided, I spend 2-3 years researching and another 2-3 years writing and revising. I haven't ever been in a writing "slump" but there are times when I am so exhausted from traveling and touring that my mind is not fresh enough to write or create. When that happens I have to unplug, rest, and recharge.

Hi Ruta! I've read your books and absolutely LOVE how rich the history is and I love learning about all the different kinds of history that you write about. How do you come up with your amazing characters, and are they maybe based off of you or anyone in your family?

Hi! In both of your books, you write about some historically brutal circumstances and the people involved really suffered, they had to endure the cruelty of other people's actions and survive. I wanted to ask you if it was ever hard to hear the real life stories people told you during research. How did you deal with it? And how did it affect the way you portrayed the emotions of the characters in your stories? Thanks!
