Hello! I hope you don't mind my asking, but in the dedication of "Inkheart" you thanked your daughter for setting aside "The Lord Of The Rings" to read your book. Are you a Tolkien fan yourself? If so, has he (as well as any other favorite authors) influenced your writing style or character designs? Also, simply for my own curiosity, how did you come up with Dustfinger's name? Thank you for your time!
Cornelia Funke
Yes, I am a great fan of Tolkien, Amanda. Though I don't like his elves (they always feel like noble with lots of servants to me:) An even greater influence was T.H.White with The Once and Future King.But... I think I was influenced by every writer whose books I ever read, both the bad and the good ones:) and by the fairy tales I grew up with, the forests I walked in, the people I met...in short...by the world:)

Dear Ma'am, I'd like to disturb you with a question ( after all, that's what this column is meant for and I didn't make it serve its purpose last time ) . If you happen to get a wish which will allow you to read your most favorite character out of a book, which character would you read out ? { Thank you replying to my comment previously. It means a LOT to me. }

Having read many of your books, I would like to ask you if you emphasize on character, plot or emotional development more as you write. Also, is there some metaphorical meaning that you intend to convey to your readers, or is it just my misconception? Finally, I would be very obliged if you could explain to me how you manage humour, for you rarely make use of slapstick comedy.
