Goodreads asked Trish MacEnulty:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Trish MacEnulty The idea for The Pink House came after I spent a few years bringing arts programs to women in prison. After my friend, Kitty Gretsch, died of breast cancer in her early 30s, I wanted to write about her and how impassioned she was about helping other people. Kitty had worked with me in the prison and the women loved her. I was also intrigued by the political events that were going on in Florida in 2000. I had lived in Tallahassee for most of the 90s, and it was quite a storm there during those few weeks when we didn't know who would be president. In addition I had actually been incarcerated myself, so I knew the inner workings of a women's prison. All those threads came together in The Pink House.
