A Goodreads user asked Shannon Messenger:

Does your cover artist read the books before he does the covers? Or do you just tell him what to draw and he goes with that?

Shannon Messenger For the first three books the draft was done early enough for him to have been able to read (though I still think my publisher might only send him the scenes they're interested in). For NEVERSEEN and LODESTAR, the draft was still being written, so I discussed scenes with my editor from the outline I'd laid out, and then wrote up ll the details Jason would need once we'd chose a scene. He does still take artistic liberties from what I tell him to make the most powerful image possible, but he tries to stay true to what I dictate
