Katharine Kerr:
Jill is one of my all-time favourite characters in fantasy fiction. I met her back in 1990 and since that time have devoured every single book in the Deverry series. Where did you get your inspiration for Jill? Was she based on one person (real, or imagined), or a composite of many?

Jill seemed to create herself as I wrote the first draft of Daggerspell. I really don't know where she came from -- or Nevyn, either, for that matter. I thought I was writing a short story about a woman warrior seeking revenge, and as I wrote the story changed, got LOTS longer, and turned out to be about a very different woman.

I have very fond memories of meeting you and Tad Williams at a book signing in At the Sign of the Dragon, with Richard and Marion. I remember we spent quite a while in the back room chatting. I still have some of the book you signed for me, I lost a lot of books in my divorce. Best wishes. ?
