Did you visit Oklahoma while writing I Will Send Rain? What was that experience like?

Rae Meadows I read all I could about the town that I fictionalized and the Oklahoma Panhandle, but I waited until the book was finished to actually visit. I wanted to create my fictional landscape and not be beholden to things as they are now. When I did finally go, though, it was a fantastic experience. "Mulehead" felt true in many ways to Boise City. One of the things I loved was being able to meet people who had lived through the Dust Bowl as children. There is so much pride in place there, which I found quite moving.
