Mo asked Cornelia Funke:

I adore your stories, Cornelia and your original and fearless way of telling them. Often as I'm writing I begin to see my book as nothing special and I fall out of love with it. I find that sometimes it is hard to see myself as a writer or to remember that all authors are simply story tellers like me. How do you keep focused, but most of all inspired and enthralled by your own stories?

Cornelia Funke a story is like a lover, Miranda. You have to keep courting it. When you fall out of love, you have to find out why, instead of looking for another story (or lover:) Stories want to be fed with passion and time, with devotion and endless patience. They need to be rewritten over and over again, until they show you who they truly are.
