I did. For almost 10 years I was a federal prosecutor and handled civil rights cases involving the use of deadly force by police officers against criminal suspects. The novel has elements of a number of the cases I worked on. Sadly, while writing the novel, there have been too many real life situations throughout the United States in which the police have used unjustified deadly force against unarmed suspects, many of whom were black, all of whom were poor or lived in poor areas.
