The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau Banks is one of my all time favorite Young Adult novels. I call it a feminist manifesto for teenage girls. What was your inspiration for that book?

Thank you. I started out wanting to write about pranks that escalated in some interesting way on a boarding school campus. Pretty soon I realized there needed to be a driving reason for the pranks -- otherwise they wouldn't matter. I searched for a way to make them really important to my main character. I am a feminist, as is anyone who believes women are entitled to equal rights, and I was excited when I found a way to explore some feminist issues in a way that I hoped would be fun to read.

The firing of Jill Abramson at the New York Times has me thinking about female power and how it's used and what happens when it's used in a male-dominated world. Which of course has me thinking about my favorite feminist heroine, Frankie Landau Banks. What do you think Frankie would make of Abramson's firing? The putative reasons behind it and the way it was conducted?
