A Goodreads user asked Shannon Messenger:

How do you get an agent? And how much does it cost to hire them, if any?

Shannon Messenger Yikes, another question that needs a much longer answer than I can give here. Really, you want to google this question because there are LOTS of websites and blog posts on the subject, most written by agents themselves, who are the people you should really be asking. Another thing you want to google is "querying agents" and "how to write a query letter" since those are the more official terms for the process. Make google your friend--I learned everything I needed to know about getting published from doing lots and lots of googling. But I will also add that any GOOD agent won't cost you anything up front (and if they try to, run far away. They're a BAD agent). Agents work on commission, meaning they get a percentage of anything they sell (industry standard is generally 15%). If they don't make you money, they don't get anything either.
