Goodreads asked Martha M. Moravec:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Martha M. Moravec That depends on what kind of writer you are aspiring to be. If your chief objective is to develop a solid fan base and steady income, then by all means do as you're told by industry pundits: pick a genre, study it and stick with it. However, if your interest tends more toward fathoming and expressing what it is to be human and fully alive, by all means familiarize yourself with the book biz, but hold sacred the words of my favorite writer: "To thine own self be true." Whatever your genre, hopes or expectations, remember that you are the writer, you are the creator, you are the one with the vision. The story came out of your soul and yours only.
