Tegan asked Chris Bohjalian:

A lot of your novels are historical fiction, particularly between WWI and WWII. Do you feel a strong sense of connection with this time period? And is there anything you've learned that you didn't know that particularly surprised you?

Chris Bohjalian I've always loved big, sweeping, epic love stories set in the midst of war: CORELLI'S MANDOLIN. ATONEMENT. THE ENGLISH PATIENT. I am, clearly, a romantic.

But I am not sure feel a particular connection to that period.

Still, I have learned much that surprises me and this one thing that always disappoints me: Our incredible ability as human beings to willfully inflict horrendous pain and suffering on others. . .
