A lot of your novels are historical fiction, particularly between WWI and WWII. Do you feel a strong sense of connection with this time period? And is there anything you've learned that you didn't know that particularly surprised you?

I've always loved big, sweeping, epic love stories set in the midst of war: CORELLI'S MANDOLIN. ATONEMENT. THE ENGLISH PATIENT. I am, clearly, a romantic.
But I am not sure feel a particular connection to that period.
Still, I have learned much that surprises me and this one thing that always disappoints me: Our incredible ability as human beings to willfully inflict horrendous pain and suffering on others. . .

I really liked Sandcastle Girls. At first I assumed that the author was a woman. Am I wrong to say that the story is told mostly in women's voices. As an aspiring would be writer I find the idea of speaking or writing in a woman's voice both frightening and pretty damn interesting. I would welcome any thoughts you have about this?
