Am I allowed a 3 way tie? Each of these couples is a union of equals.
1) Nick and Nora Charles ("The Thin Man") the banter is wonderful (and a little leeway, because I'm thinking of William Powell and Myrna Loy in the movie series.I did read the book)
2) Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara. She was a damsel in distress, but she pulled herself out of trouble (not in the nicest way) and he saw through her faults and still loved her.
3) Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett. She wasn't afraid to be herself, to be smart and outspoken. He was able to change his mind and see past the financial differences and "breeding" to see that she was a good woman and excellent wife material.
