I love the interaction between the two couples in Wallace Stegner's masterpiece Crossing to Safety... Larry and Sally Morgan and Charity and Sid Lang. All have difficulties and weaknesses and vulnerabilities which they occasionally play off against each other. Just a brilliant and deeply emphatic understanding of character.
