حبيبتي صوفيا. أعلم أنك ستتألمين كثيراً لرحيلي، وأنه ليحزنني ذلك أشد الحزن، ولكنني آمل من كل قلبي أن تدركي الأسباب التي تدفعني إلى ذلك الرحيل، ولم تكن أمامي وسيلة سواه لتلافي مأساةٍ قد تكون مفجعة. لقد غدا وضعي في هذا البيت غير محتمل يا صوفي. لم أعد قادراً على ممارسة الحياة اليومية في هذه الرفاهية التي تحيط بي، وبات الثراء يخنقني. وقد طال صبري على هذا! حتى انقطع رجائي في مزيد من الصبر. يقيني شر اليأس من عالمٍ تشهيّته كثيراً، كما يتشهاه كل عجوزٍ بلغ السن التي بلغت! وما أنشده هو عالمٌ من السكون والوحدة، لا يفسده ضجيج المال، وأنانية الثراء، ووحشية الرغبة في التملّك! أريد أن أقضي الأيام المتبقية لي من العمر في سلام. أرجوك يا صوفيا، لا تحاولي البحث عن مكاني الذي سأذهب إليه، من أجل إعادتي إلى إيزيانا بوليانا، فإن هذا لن يفيد أحداً شيئاً، بل سيزيد تعاستنا جميعاً، كما أنه لن يغيّر من عزمي على الرحيل، وإني لأشكرك كل الشكر على الثمانية والأربعين عاماً من الحياة الأمينة الكريمة التي أسعدِتني بها. وأتوسل إليك أن تغفري لي كل ما ارتكبت من أخطاء في حقك. مثلما أغفر لك عن طيب خاطر غضبك ومعارضاتك الشديدة المتعلّقة بقراري في التنازل عن أملاكي الشخصية للفلاحين. وأنصحك يا حبيبتي بإخلاص بأن تحاولي التعايش في سماحة مع الموقف الجديد الذي سينشأ برحيلي. وألا تحملي لي بسببه في قلبك أية ضغينة، أو كراهية، وإذا أردت أن تعرفي شيئاً عن أنبائي بعد أن أستقرّ في المكان الذي سأرحل إليه، والذي لا أعرفه إلا بعد أن أصل إليه، فستجدين بغيتك عند ابنتنا العزيزة ساشا، فهي وحدها التي سأخصها بذكر مكان حياتي الجديدة، وقد وعدتني بألا تذكر لك أو لسواك مكاني..”
