P.E., I read this in a college French Lit. course back in the late 1960's. The professor chose this novel because he considered Mauriac a great prose stylist, and therefore difficult to translate into English. It's also noted for its feminism and its attack on provincial bourgeois society of the period (1920's). At the time, I just found it hard to read and translate. I'll be interested to get your opinion. ;)
