They sing no songs in Hel, nor do they celebrate heroes,
For silent is that dismal realm and cheerless,
But the story of the Gjallerbru and the god who defended it is whispered across the nine worlds.
And when a new arrival asks about the one to whom even Hela bows her head,
The answer is always the same:
He stood alone at Gjallerbru.
And that is answer enough.

No. I’m not. I have been planning to destroy the Breakworld since I was a child.

Sérgio | 460 comments “If the author of this little volume is an artist he draws poorly, but he has a certain knack for writing… If he’s a writer he’s just middling, but to make up for that he has a nice little flair for drawing.”

Introductory quote from Art Spiegelman for his Breakdowns collection. It was originally from Rodolphe Toppfer, the creator of the first comics.

"Jean Grey is dead, Agent."
"Yeah, that'll last."

From Astonishing X-Men, Vol. 1: Gifted by Joss Whedon.

I just loved the way that they made fun of the way that Jean Grey keeps getting killed and then resurrected over and over again!

message 10: by Andrew (new)

Andrew "...Live our lives, lacking anything better to do. Devise reason later.

Born from oblivion; bear children, hell-bound as ourselves, go into oblivion. There is nothing else. Existence is random.

Has no pattern save what we imagine after staring at it for too long. No meaning save what we choose to impose.

This rudderless world is not shaped by vague metaphysical forces.

It is not God who kills the children. Not fate that butchers them or destiny that feeds them to the dogs. It’s us. Only us.”

Anna (Bananas) LOL, Lela... That one is memorable.

message 14: by Mike (new)

Mike | 289 comments That opening line certainly let me know I was in for something... different. The whole first volume of Saga is a twisted, disturbing masterpiece.

Echoing Ken's thought for others here around NYC (and other affected areas) to stay safe the next few days.

Also...

Rukia: Wha--wha'd you say? A rescuer isn't supposed to ignore the rescuee!

Ichigo: Yeah? And what kind of rescuee complains about the rescue!? Why don't you go sit in a corner and tremble in fear and cry out "Save me! Save me!" like you're supposed to?!

Rukia: I do not need saving, and I do NOT tremble!”

I hope I'm not repeating this one !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Joshua | 22 comments "See, there were these two guys in a lunatic asylum... and one night, one night they decide they don't like living in an asylum any more. They decide they're going to escape! So, like, they get up onto the roof, and there, just across this narrow gap, they see the rooftops of the town, stretching away in the moon light... stretching away to freedom. Now, the first guy, he jumps right across with no problem. But his friend, his friend didn't dare make the leap. Y'see... Y'see, he's afraid of falling. So then, the first guy has an idea... He says 'Hey! I have my flashlight with me! I'll shine it across the gap between the buildings. You can walk along the beam and join me!' B-but the second guy just shakes his head. He suh-says... He says 'Wh-what do you think I am? Crazy? You'd turn it off when I was half way across!"

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

"Captain America is not here to lead the country. I'm here to serve it. If I am a Captain, I'm a soldier. Not of any military branch but of the American people. Years ago, in a simpler time, this suit and this shield were created as a symbol to help make America the land it's suppose to be... To help it realize its destiny.

Ricocheting from super-villain duel to super-villain duel doesn't always serve that purpose. There's a difference between fighting against evil and fighting for the common good. I'm not always able to choose my battles... but effective immediately I am going to make an effort to choose the battles that matter. Battles against injustice, against cynicism, against intolerance.

Together, you and I will identify and confront America's problems. Together we will figure out what we are and what we can be. Together we will define the American dream and make it an American reality."

That last one is just a wonderful sentiment.

Mike | 289 comments “There are only three forms of high art: the symphony, the illustrated children's book and the board game.” - Saga

“KAPELA: Just look above you. Do you see? That is called the immense board of lights. And there is the Great Black and, strewn across it, small and surrounded and vulnerable and brave, there is the Great White.

COMMUTER: Oh. Oh, yeah. Of course. Hah. You know, that's perfect. That's really perfect. And the Great White... I mean, there's so much more black. A-are we losing?

KAPELA: No. Once there was only black. We are winning.” - Top Ten

message 46: by Brandon (new)

Brandon (sholundil) | 34 comments This is from Wonder Womans' thought panels from the final few pages in the Superman/Wonder Woman Power Couple book where Zod releases his girlfriend from the Phantom Zone;

'Our stories will separate for a time. I think this is what he wants, even if he won't ask. He'll face his enemies and I'll face mine for a time.

But only for a time.

For there is at least one truth, and both of us know it. It's one of the things that calls us to each other, despite everything.

BECAUSE SOMEDAY OUR BATTLES WILL END. AND THERE WILL BE NO GREATER TRAGEDY THAN FACING THAT END ALONE.'

The writing works so much better with the artwork and adds a whole different level but it is still excellent writing but if it's too long a quote try this one from the same sequence;

'...stories have their own lives, their own logic and they will play out as they will.'
