When should a book be banned?

As for schools I suppose its their prerogative to limit or monitor what books they carry, however I don't think they have the right to tell a student they can't read a book that the student has bought themselves, I think that's crossing a line.

Perhaps before when societies were homogeneous and lived according to one core mentality it would have been easier, but with globalisation and shifting perspectives and the advocacy of tolerance, the one man's meat is another man's poison can lead to some sensitivity over what is read.

Define banned.
I think it's perfectly fine for a school, library, or business to not allow some books in its vicinity on account for being too graphic or too opinionated or whatever. They have their right to screen if they want. However, if you want to make a book illegal, I think that's crossing the line. You're welcome to not carry it in your store, but to arrest anyone who does is kind of infringing rights.

I was with you at graphic; obviously books like Black Dagger Brotherhood shouldn't be allowed in schools
... you lost me with opinionated. Why can't a book be opinionated? Like the book "White Victims, Black Villains: Gender, Race, and Crime News in US Culture."

I have not read either of those, so... I'm just going to pretend that I know they're graphic/opinionated.
When I say opinionated I mean that if a business or something has a library or funded a library then it's fine for them to not want books that are anti-whatever that business stands for. In the same way you wouldn't see anti-smoking ads all over a tobacco company.

Hmm... True... maybe I should add to the intro thing... public places not business owned stuff.
On a side note most anti smoking things are funded by tobacco companies...

To cover their own ass. Ever wonder how they get away with not placing ingredients on their products?

Well, considering I've never held/seen close enough to read anything tobacco, no, I haven't.
But I have wondered many times how cigarettes are legal and other drugs aren't. Cigarettes sound way worse than a lot of illegal stuff.

Perhaps some day mankind will mature beyond this form of ignorance. It seems that too many still want to destroy what they don't understand or agree with.
I know... but think about it for a second... and it sounds suspiciously like an insult to Bible freaks
Only you would think of something like that Ox.

@Reem
Why? Christianity has been burning books for longer than communism has been around...still do to

I ask you.
When should a book be banned? Why should it be banned because someone doesn't agree with the content?
