Why do we analyze texts for their rhetorical moves? Why do we use them ourselves? How can we use our knowledge of rhetorical skills to help us in our lives?

Janelle Miles | 9 comments Mod
We analyze texts for their rhetorical moves so we can understand the text better. For example, if I know what the "moves" are, I can better understand an author's bias so I can make a more informed decision about whether a text is believable or not. In other words, I can make an informed decision about the author's CREDIBILITY. We use rhetorical moves ourselves so we can make our point more clearly. So people can HEAR us or UNDERSTAND us better. These skills help us in our lives because we can get what we want when we communicate more clearly!!!!!

Edgar Hernandez | 2 comments It is important to analysis the readers moves because as readers we want feel emotion and intrigue. We can also learn the way that author conveys ideas. The moves the author make are a way of trying to grab your attention. We as writers use rhetorical moves to get our point across and so that readers can understand our points of opinion. We can use knowledge from rhetorical skills in everyday conversations. To those who understand our level of personality goes up a whole new level of knowledge. :)

Alyssa Zokoe | 8 comments It's important to analyze texts because by looking at other's writing, we better ourselves as writers in learning different devices and techniques to include in our own papers. As we analyze texts, we get a better understanding at seeing good or poor writing.

message 5: by James (new)

James | 3 comments It is important to analyze other authors writing to help improve our own. By understanding their own rhetoric "moves", we can add more to our deck of cards and use them later on. Understanding what others use, and how they are good/bad helps us understand what to strive for in our own writing pieces, whether for a paper or in our own stories.

Vauwn Olson | 9 comments It's important to analyze texts so we can get an idea of the author's message and learn ethos, pathos, and logos throughout the text. Rheotorical devices help us learn the author's opinion, and figure out if they're credible or not. Analysing also helps our own writing!

message 37: by Emily (new)

Emily | 6 comments I think we analyze other peoples writing to better improve our own, and to get a deeper meaning on what the author is trying to say. We use the rhetorical devices ourselves to give more depth to a plain essay, and to establish ethos with the readers.

message 38: by Jess (last edited Oct 15, 2012 05:26PM) (new)

Jess Guillaume | 8 comments I think we analyze rhetorical moves writers make because it can completely alter how you read the text. Analyzing these things highlight aspects of the reading you never saw before, like the authors purpose or connotation. It also helps a lot in developing our own writing, we see new devices we can implement and discover existing ones we didn't even know we used.

so busted by mrs.miles hahahaa, but i liked how you connected rhetorical devices on paper to using them in conversation, not something i thought of

message 42: by Claire (new)

Claire Ross | 8 comments I think it's important to analyze writers' moves so we can understand the author better, and in return understand their writing better. For example if we look at why an author organized a story a certain way, we can figure out the author's purpose and better understand their story.

message 43: by Claire (new)

Claire Ross | 8 comments Jess wrote: "I think we analyze rhetorical moves writers make because it can completely alter how you read the text. Analyzing these things highlight aspects of the reading you never saw before, like the author..."

Claire Ross | 8 comments Alyssa wrote: "It's important to analyze texts because by looking at other's writing, we better ourselves as writers in learning different devices and techniques to include in our own papers. As we analyze texts,..."

I agree; it's important to look at others' writing so we can not make the mistakes that they do or imitate their techniques if they're effective.

message 45: by Rory (new)

Rory Conn | 8 comments We analyze texts to better understand and connect with what the author is trying to express in his writing. We use rhetorical moves in our writing to express the way we feel and make the subject and topic clear to the reader. Having the knowledge of rhetorical skills helps us better connect with the world that is surrounding and have more clarity.

message 46: by Claire (new)

Claire Ross | 8 comments Laura wrote: "It's important to analyze texts so we can improve as writers, and also so we can get good grades in class."

Lol, I like the last part. But looking at others' writing really does help.

I like when you said, "To those who understand our level of personality goes up a whole new level of knowledge " because its so true, being intellectual makes your personality seem more appealing in that category of being smart.

message 48: by Rory (new)

Rory Conn | 8 comments Emily wrote: "I think we analyze other peoples writing to better improve our own, and to get a deeper meaning on what the author is trying to say. We use the rhetorical devices ourselves to give more depth to a ..."

I liked how you made the connection with the word 'deeper' and 'depth' because when you use rhetorical devices it creates a depth and further understanding and clarity to the pieces you are working on.

message 49: by Rory (new)

Rory Conn | 8 comments James wrote: "It is important to analyze other authors writing to help improve our own. By understanding their own rhetoric "moves", we can add more to our deck of cards and use them later on. Understanding wha..."

I like how you said "we can add more to our deck of cards". It's so true because with every bit of knowledge that we add to our current supply, we grow in our minds and as people.

message 50: by Lisa (last edited Oct 15, 2012 03:45PM) (new)

Lisa Le | 8 comments We analyze texts for their rhetorical moves to find a deeper meaning of the texts. By understanding the writer's ethos we can determine their credibility. We can also use moves, such as transitions and tone, to make our writing flow and interesting, otherwise people wouldn't want to read what we have to say and possibly fall asleep.
