Choose a trait that describes your protagonist or a secondary character in your IR book.

Remember the criteria for what makes a "4" or exemplar reading response!

Did I….
• Write a topic sentence that provided the title, author, and genre of my text?
• Provide context of what is happening in the text, so my reader understands what I’m talking about?
• Find a direct quote from the text that proves my idea?
• Thoroughly explain the significance of my quote/how it proves my idea?
• Check for correct punctuation and spelling?

Corey | 43 comments In Jeff Kinney's realistic fiction book Diary of a wimpy kid, the trait that best describes Rodrick is mad. Rodrick really wanted to win the talent show with his band and they wanted it on tape so they could show it to get a job. Rodrick wanted to miss the science fair and fail school but his parents didn't like that idea and he was forced to do it. After he turn his first science fair early, he was force to redo it and he didn't have time for that. On the day of the talent show they went but they lost. Rodrick asked for the tape but after watching it, it was useless because his mom kept saying things that Rodrick couldn't turn in. H got mad,"At first Rodrick turned at Mom for messing things up. Then Rodrick turned on Greg for not doing the right things for him," This proves that since his mom and Greg didn't film it right, his chances of getting that job was very low since he had nothing to show. The best trait that describes Rodrick is Mad

Wesley | 50 comments In Rick Riordan's fictional novel the Mark of Athena, a trait that best describes Annabeth is self-conscious. this book is about 7 half-bloods, half human and half god are chosen to complete the quest. the quest is to get to the doors of death. Because she is the daughter of Athena she was born the the top of her head. "Talking about that always made Annabeth feel self-conscious, like she was some sort of freak"(35) This means she is feeling bad about herself, not being born like others but being born from Athena's forehead. Imagine being born from your mom's forehead and everyone knew about it. That would mean major bullying issues.

Aaron | 22 comments In Dave Pelzers auto-biography, A Man Named Dave, a trait that best describes Dave is dedicated. This book is about Dave who was abused as a child and then he ran away and ended up in a foster home. Because he was abused as a child he feels that joining the air-force would help him over come his dark past. "I have to go to the air-force now, because its what everyone would have wanted, and who knows maybe i can fly away from my dreams of my past." This means that he still has memories about his past so he thinks that the air-force can solve his problems.

Ilijah A | 40 comments In the fantasy book City of Glass by Cassandra Clare, the best trait that describes the second protagonist, Jace is arrogant. He always says that he is the best shadow hunter. He always says how he is the best and how he is better than everyone else. Whenever Jace fights someone he tries to show off and be the best he can be. “Not everything is about you," Clary said furiously.
"Possibly," Jace said, "but you do have to admit that the majority of things are.” This quote shows that Jace thinks the majority of things are about him. Even if he can not do something someone else can, he still says he is better. Therefore Jaces trait is arrogant

Andy Chen | 44 comments In Rick Riordan's fantasy novel, The Sea of Monsters, the trait that best describes Percy is supportive. Percy is a 14 year old half blood who lives in Camp Half Blood. He loves blue chocolate chip cookies and helps others with quests and rescuing people. Since being a supportive person, Percy stated, "Whoever and no matter how much he hates or are enemies with a person he knows, safety is always a big factor". This quote shows Percy is supportive because whatever person is struggling with something, or is at danger, he would always help them, even if they are very evil. Percy also helped Clarisse with a quest that required only herself to complete, which she needed help with. Therefore, because Percy shows he is helpful and caring to any immortals and mortals, the trait that best describes Percy is supportive.

Zoe | 25 comments The the fictional novel Ereth's Birthday by Brian Floca, the trait that describes Ereth the porcupine the most is caring. Ereth is an old porcupine that is usually very grumpy. One day he finds a mother fox that is caught in a trap, and is forced to take care of her 3 kits when she dies. He finds the kits and tells them the bad news, then remembers overhearing poachers talking about laying 16 traps near the fox's home. Due to the snow, the traps are almost impossible to find. Ereth then finds a way to protect the kits from accidently steeping in a trap. One quote that shows Ereth is caring is when the mother asks him to take care of her kits. He states '"But.. oh, I suppose... I... could... for a bit. But only a bit"(42). Another quote that shows this s when he promises: "I'll do it. But only for a short time. Only until their father gets back"(44). The 2 quotes show that Ereth is caring because he didn't HAVE to take care of the kits, but decided to do it. It also shows that he is caring because he knew that the kits would probably die if they had no one to take care of them.

Karen (allergic2haters) | 37 comments Mockingjay (The Hunger Games, #3) by Suzanne Collins

In Suzanne Collins' science fiction, MockingJay, and the trait that best describes Katniss is responsible. In the other science fiction book called The Hunger Games Katniss Gale, and her father would always hunt for food in the wood to feed her family and taking Prim's place in the Hunger Games. "Inside the woods they roam freely, and there are added concerns like venomous snakes, rabid, animals, and no real paths to follow. But there's also food if you know how to find it. My father knew and taught me some before he was blown to bits in a mine explosion" (5) in the first Hunger Games book. This shows that Katniss knew how to hunt and get food for her family to eat. In the Hunger Games "it's time for the drawing. Effie Trinket says as she always does, "Ladies first!" and crosses to the glass ball with the girls' names. She reaches in, digs her hand deep into the a collective breath and then you can hear a pin drop, and I'm feeling nauseous and so desperately hoping that it's not me, that's not me, that's not me. Effie Trinket crosses back to the podium, smoother the slip and paper, and reads out the name in a clear voice. And it's not me. It's Prim Everdeen." (20) in the Hunger Games. "Prim!" The strangled cry comes out of my throat, and my muscles begin to move again. "Prim!" I don't need to shove through the crowd. The other kids make way immediately allowing a straight path to the stage. I reach for her just as she is about to mount the steps. With one sweep of my arm, I push her behind me. "I volunteer!" I gasp. "I volunteer as tribute!" (22) in the Hunger Games book. This shows that Katniss was protecting her younger sister Prim and took her place on the Hunger Games. In the book MockingJay, Katniss was also responsible but in a different way. She saw her prep team from the Hunger Games that supported her, but was captured by the Capitol. "That's my chance. I darted around the distracted guard, push open the door marked 3908, and find them. Half naked, bruised, and shackled to the wall. My Prep team." (46) "I can't get Octavia to uncover her face, but she lifts in slightly. The shackles on her wrists shift down a few inches, revealing raw sores beneath them. "I'm bringing you to my mother." I address the guard. "Unchain them." The guard shakes his head. "It's not authorized." "Unchain them! Now!" I yell." (49) in the MockingJay book. This shows that Katniss was very responsible for letting her prep team go. Therefore, Katniss was responsible for many different reasons.

Gabby T. | 22 comments In Stephenie Myer's science-fiction novel The Host the trait that best describes the protangist Melanie is she is determined.Melanie is a survivor in a world were parastic aliens called souls take over human bodies.Melanie gets caught and a soul called wanderer takes her body. Even though Wanderer is in Melanie's body, Melanie unlike most humans that have been taken over remains partly conscious. She and wanderer at the begining fight as she trys to control her own body again."There was no doubt that she was getting stronger.Just like the dreams." This show that melanie is determined because, she is determined to get her body back she's not giving up, and she giving it her to get her body back from wanderer. In conclusion the best trait that descibes Melanie is determined.

Jamilah B | 37 comments In the non - fiction memoir, A long way gone by Ishmael Beah, the trait that best describes the antagonists the rebels is careless. The rebels are careless because they don't care about anyone but themselves. They killed almost everyone in Sierra Leone and burned down almost all of their houses. They shot women, men, girls, boys, and they killed babies. They congratulate their selves on how many houses the burned and people they kill."I especially enjoyed burning this village. We caught everyone here.No one escaped. That is how good it was. We carried out the command and executed everyone. Commander will be pleased when he gets here"(97). This quote proves my idea because it specifically tells you that the rebels were proud of what bad thing they have to done to the villages and the people living in them. Therefore, the trait that best describes the rebels is careless.

Altamir III III (longdeoking) | 27 comments In Walter Dean Myers realistic fiction book,Game, a trait that best describes my protagonist Drew is that he takes his ball game seriously. He plays at a team in his school. The school is called Baldwin High School. He is the star player of the team. Everybody in the team wants him on the court when they are losing because he is the type player that everybody needs to change the game. In pages 183 to 188, it describes a game that Drew's team, Baldwin High School, went up against, which is Roosevelt. On these pages, it says how that Roosevelt played like they were never in a gym. Every player on the team who got the ball just did what they wanted to do. So for that, on page 185, it says that they were just doing these stuff but on line 10, it says that he wants that win so so badly and that he is mad. So then he went out and showed everybody how to play ball. He played hard on taking it in the paint and strong on defense, but he knew that really didn't matter. So on that, they won by 70-58. In conclusion, Drew takes his ball game extremely serious.

Kenjo | 41 comments In Liz Murray's memoir, Breaking Night, the trait that best describes her is hopeful. Liz Murray grew up in the Bronx and was raised by drug addicted parents. The majority of the money from the family went towards cocaine. Her house was dirty and she was mocked at school. At age 15 she found herself on the streets. In the text, she states that after her mother died of AIDS she decided to take control of her life and do something with it. Liz joined a high school and started learning again. She would do anything to get her assignments done. Whether it was on the streets, or on the subway, or late night at school she tried her best to complete it. This statement proves that Liz is hopeful because although her life was in ruins and she was homeless, she tried and hoped for the best. She did not give up and kept on going with hope.

Elizabeth Sanchez | 14 comments In the Anonymous Diary, Go Ask Alice I think the best trait that supports her is a downer. The anonymous 15 year old girl continues to write in her Diary about how much her life just feel apart. Family, friends and love life just all of a sudden slipped. All she seems to want to do know is leave her school and move somewhere away from everything. A new everything. She can't even seem to be satisfied with herself. "Dear Diary, I haven't written for about a week because nothing of interest has happened. The same old dumb teachers teaching the same old dumb subjects in the same old dumb school. I seem to be the kind of losing interest in everything. At first I thought high school would be fun but it's just dull. Everything's dull. Maybe it's just because I'm growing up and life is becoming more blase. Julie Brown had a party but I didn't go. I've put on seven ugly, fat, sloppy, slobby pounds and I don't have anything I can wear. I'm beginning to look as slobby as I feel." This quote shows that she already puts her self down, she's quite insecure about her weight. It also proves the fact that she is a downer upon her life, when she can look at the bright side of things but simply chooses not to.

Yamil Cifuentes | 40 comments In R.L. Stine's Realistic fiction "Attack of the Mutant," the best trait that best describes Skipper (Protagonist) is crazy. Skipper have been seeing things coming to life from his comic book. But Skipper taught it was just an allusion. "I'm not crazy, this isn't real, it's just your imagination, just open your eyes." This quote shows that he doesn't know what's happening and Skipper thinks he is losing his mind. But what Skipper does is find out what is happening in his comic book.
