Yes! Too many people die because of drivers peering into their phones.

Yes! I totally agree! I'm going to give a speech at some point about the dire consequences of these actions. I want to explain how cell phone use while driving can interfere with the different parts of the brain used. Like, tell which part of the brain is used for cell phone use and which part is used for driving and see how they contradict. I want to bring a very scientific approach to it. That way, it is fact, not merely opinion. Okay, now, back to the debate! :)

Okay, how about hands-free devices? Personally, I'm against them, simply because you're still thinking about who you're talking to and not concentrating solely on driving.

I agree. You might fiddle with the device, and stuff, basically all you should be doing while driving is driving.

Yes, absolutely. I absolutely, totally, 110% agree with that statement.

Yet, I have a question: does that mean all talking should be banned too?

message 11: by Leah, I'm HI-larious! (Head Mod) (new)

Leah (lepolk) | 3478 comments Mod
Yes, I think so. Anything (such as talking on the phone) that partially or wholly distracts you should not be used while driving.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

However, what you'll end up doing is banning talking at all in the car, all radio, all other things that have the remotest chance of distracting someone: that will cause great unhappiness among certain drivers that CAN multitask. I agree with the fact to a degree: new drivers should be limited BUT remember the American prohibition, by banning it they just encouraged it

That's true.

message 14: by Yazid (Ciel) (new)

Yazid (Ciel) (plue) In my opinion, there is no need to ban the use of cellphone in cars. If the case is because "Too many people die because of drivers peering into their phones, " then the one at fault are the drivers themselves. Having a driving license, as far as I know, permitted you to drive but how you drive the cars under control depends on mostly you.

Xdyj | 127 comments But I think bad driving habits endanger not only the driver him/herself but also other ppl, so maybe banning them for public safety reason can be justified, just like banning drunk driving.

message 16: by Yazid (Ciel) (new)

Yazid (Ciel) (plue) Using the quote, "bad driving habits", do you think it is really related to the use of cell phone? Mind explaining?

Sorry I don't know how to drive yet, so I'm not 100% sure if driving while using cellphones should be considered a risky driving habit. Using cellphone while driving is currently banned in my hometown iirc, and the first hit of a Google search on "driving habits" is an article that lists "talking on cell phone" as one of the "10 most dangerous driving habits", so I guess at least some people think so. Personally I would support banning it if there is sufficient evidence that it would substantially increase the risk of traffic accident.

Idk but it seems to me that the same argument would also work on drunk driving.

message 18: by Yazid (Ciel) (new)

Yazid (Ciel) (plue) Hmm... makes sense.

But, as you said, "driving habits", it means that the habit supposedly starts when the person drives, isn't it?

I thought it means stuffs some ppl usually do while driving.

message 20: by Yazid (Ciel) (last edited Nov 20, 2012 11:29AM) (new)

Yazid (Ciel) (plue) ... I don't think a driver who had just got his license would dare to answer calls when he is driving, But it just an assumption. Supposedly he got used to driving, then he would try to do new things such as using hand phones.

But, according to Leah, the use of hand phones would make us lose our focus when driving. But, why would the driver uses it in the first place?

Well, before driving was made illegal in Maryland, my mother was an expert and driving and talking on the phone. She could turn the car with one hand while the other was on her phone, pressed to her ear.

But many people can't do this, so I do agree with the law. As with the texting law. It's just not smart.

In Maryland (where I live) texting/talking on the phone is illegal. Apparently the government is asking people to actually call the police if they see anyone do these things.

message 28: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 2483 comments It should, but it wouldn't work. People would still use cell phones in cars and just hide them if they saw a police officer.

In MD police are asking people to call 911 when they see someone texting/calling when driving. Then again, I guess the people who see them would also be driving...wut

message 32: by Evan (new)

Evan (sampsom) | 578 comments It should be. There is no doubt to that. The number of people who put the lives of others at risk just because they "need to take a phone call" rather than wait till the next lay-by to ring them back. I will never do it, even if it is the most important phone call in the world. I would not want to risk my life or the lives of others.

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

Now some cars are being made with a bluetooth wireless, so it is hand free, so they press a button on their steering wheel and you can talk to the person
