The poll questions closed this past Wednesday and here are the results:


Poll Question #1 – Should we continue Brain Pain in 2013?

Yes - 97.6%
No - 2.4%

Poll Question #2 – Reading Projects for 2013

1 – Magic Realism – 23.8%
2 – Faust – 16.3%
3 – Both MR and Faust – 43.8%
4 – Neither, more difficult books – 16.3%

Option 3 wins by a big margin. However, in a possibly ill-advised attempt to satisfy all members and with a personal belief that democracy’s “majority rules” ethos seldom works as planned, we’re going to have three parallel reading projects for 2013 – Magic Realism, Faust Through the Centuries and a difficult books project - “The Spine 2013”. The selections for Magic Realism and the Faust project are already posted on the site here:

There will be a few additions/enhancements to these lists to round them out a bit.

For “The Spine 2013”, we will begin with Virginia Woolf’s To The Lighthouse and we’ll read Murakami’s 1Q84 in the summer, but we need to select another 4 – 6 books to fill out the year. Please go to this discussion and comment, especially those of you who chose Option 4 for the poll:

I’ll be spending November and most of December preparing a reading schedule and other materials. I’ll send messages when these are ready to review.
