Kendra (madamejade) | 147 comments The story of United Fruit begins with the construction of the railroad of Costa Rica in 1871. The construction was led by 23 year old industrialist Minor Keith. His brilliant project cost the lives of both of his brothers as well as five thousand other workers. Well, anything for a railroad. But Keith was a man who would do anything to get himself ahead in the world. His efforts paid off and after the rails were constructed, he was often called by the title, “The Uncrowned King of Central America.” How does that in any way, shape, or form start a fruit company? Well, the railroad was actually only the beginning of Keith’s master plan (I have to say I idolize his planning skills). As the railroad grew longer and longer and the stakes grew higher and higher… Keith planted banana trees on the side of the tracks. The bananas soon blossomed and when the rails were finished, there was an easy way to get workers to harvest the bananas and even more easy to transport them to the U.S. (the leading consumer of bananas) because of the railroad. By the time Keith was 35, he owned three banana companies. Together with a few cronies, they formed the Boston Fruit company. In 1899, The Boston Company merged with another fruit company to form the UFCO (United Fruit Company), the largest banana company in the world full of plantations everywhere from Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Panama and the Dominican Republic. The UFCO also owned 112 miles of railroad for moving their bananas to ports for shipment.
Bananas are very powerful indeed. So powerful that the UFCO actually began to take over countries. Oh, never directly, of course. It started on Guatemala, with the dictator known as Manuel Estrada Cabrera, because that was his name. In 1901 this Guatemalan dictator gave UFCO the exclusive rights to transport mail between Guatemala and the United States of America. Until then, United Fruit had never had anything to do with Guatemala. But Keith decided that it was a very good idea to start business with a country ruled by a right-wing dictator that would do anything that United Fruit wanted. Soon, acre upon acre of land in Guatemala was owned by United Fruit. They used this land to make railroads, new companies that followed UFCO, and telegraph lines from the capital of Guatemala all the way to Puerto Barrios. Soon, more and more countries in Central and South America yielded to the might of the banana. UFCO was becoming an empire. But no country was more under United Fruit’s thumb than Guatemala. About 25% of the UFCO’s total production was centered in Guatemala. In this country, United Fruit controlled almost all means of travel and communication. United Fruit charged a tariff to every item of fright that left the country from Puerto Barrios.

Why did the chicken cross the road? Explained:

His family was experiencing financial troubles, and needed money. He tried applying for many jobs, but they just didn't quite work out. After ending up in the drug business to support his family, a deal went bad and he was shot, landing him in the hospital. The night his family arrived to check on him, the same shooter made his way to his room, and murdered his wife and 3 children, and somehow managed to evade police.

Months after this incident, Ralph, the same chicken who was in the hospital and witnessed his family's murder, was finally released. He had nothing to live for, nothing to look forward to in the future. He took up alcohol abuse for some time, until realizing what truly had to be done. He began tracking down his family's killer, and with each day spent, he became closer and closer to discovering the dealer's whereabouts. One day, he finally figured out who it was.

As he arrived at the killers' home, he took one last deep breath, then stormed in.

After fighting through many of the dealers' body-guards, Ralph finally reached the notorious drug dealing murder, Foghorn Leghorn. As a bloody battle ensued, it was clear who the winner would be..

As Ralph staggered out of the destroyed home, bloodied, yet victorious, he realized something. All the tracking, all the killing, all the bloodshed he had created, was all in vain. He realized that taking Foghorn's life didn't, and wouldn't, bring his family back.
Finding himself dumbfounded, he began to trot, head down, through the field where the bad drug deal happened, almost a year ago now. He took one last deep breath, looked at the stars, and took his first step on the road. This was it he decided, he was finally going to reunite with his family again once more.

As the headlights raced towards him, he heard his family in unison whisper to him "You're finally home Ralph, you're finally home."
