In the Swan's orientation video Dr. Marvin Cand;e (or Pierre Chang) said you got to punch in the Numbers and push the button every 108 minutes because of 'an incident' that happened not long after the Swan became operational.

WHAT IF the incident took place in the future --
The people jumping through time because Ben moved the Island?

WHAT IF these people (Sawyer, Juliet, Miles, Jin, Daniel) somehow made contact with the Dharma Initiative in the past and told them about the danger and volatility of time travelling?

MAYBE that's why Dharma Initiative reconfigured the use of the Swan station. Pushing the button every 108 minutes could restrain the 'almost limitless energy.

Co-creator and head writer Damon Lindelof said,

"The function of the Hatch, what it is built for, is because there was this accident here. Basically, if you were to perceive the fact that the Hatch is a structure that is essentially a big thumb, and that thumb is sticking in a dyke.
And that dyke is holding back this massive electromagnetic anomaly that is just sort of illustrated on the other side of this wall that makes Jack's key rise. That's what the design is."


MAYBE when the Swan was still active you could not turn the Wheel and move the Island.
That was why Locke was 'led' to the Pearl station. After he went there he lost his faith on the Island and he stopped pushing the button. Later on he destroyed the computer and Desmond Hume had to use the fail-safe key. The sky turned purple. The Swan imploded.
Perhaps after that the Orchid is once again functioning at 100% capacity.

Interesting theory.
This season should certainly show us why our losties are trotting aroundin DHARMA costumes!!
