~Jennifer~ (book_addiction) | 929 comments So this challenge may not be as hard as the title claims, but it will be challenging. Each month you'll have a different assignment to complete. If for some reason one month is impossible. You are allowed one substitution. Just let me know you're using it. You'll be able to pick a different month to copy for the month that is giving you problems. Only once, though! Happy Reading!! ☺

Update:
You may use the following one time each:
a) Swap one month for another.
b) Duplicate a month.
c) Create your own challenge one month.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 948 comments Hmmm. Thinking. I have absolutely no interest in reading a 2,000 page book. I don't even know of any. (How many pages in Don Quixote?)My Jan book club book is Infinite Jest but I think that's only 1,000 something and well not May.

Also I don't read straight out "horror". But I know some urban fantasy books get shelved or put in the "horror" category. Would those count?

(eta: just did an internet search and DQ only has about 1,000 pages. couldn't find a list of books with 2,000 or more pages)

I think I'm gonna have to join this. :D And I already now I'll be replacing the June assignment with something else unless reading to my cats counts. *lol*
Oh, and for May: Any helpful Listopia or other lists to help me find a book with 2000 pages? (Or recommendations, for that matter?) XD

None of which interest me. There's only a couple of 2,000 as far as I can see. Lots of books with 1,000+. So I'll make my decision once I get a ruling on the "horror" month.

Kattibrie | 102 comments The 2000+ pages mont desn't bother me - I've been meaning to read Three Kingdoms for quite some time now. I'll probably wanna change the "read to someone else" category (I don't have anyone to whom to read) but then that leaves me stuck with the "romance" one which I'm not too happy to do - normally I can hardly even tolerate 1 romantic novel, let alone 5! :o I'll have to think it trough...

message 14: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 948 comments Oh I missed that one. I doubt my teenager will let me read to her.

I think I will skip this challenge.

message 15: by Chaitra (last edited Nov 24, 2012 12:48PM) (new)

Chaitra (chaitra_ganesh) I really want to do this, but I have questions too. Will any book shelved as romance count? I'm not at all a romance reader, so I'll probably read some classics shelved as romance for Feb, if that works.

Also 2000+ pages. The only book I can think of that I want to read is In Search of Lost Time, but that's commonly broken up into 7 volumes. So, this is my question. Would a series count, if the combined number of pages is more than 2000? If not, would you consider reducing the number of pages to 1000 and maybe have us read two books?

ETA: I missed the read to someone else task. I only have my husband and a cat in the house, and my husband has the selective hearing down pat. I'm not sure my cat will listen to me either. None of my friends around here have kids I can read to. This one is tough, if the other two don't work either.

message 16: by NayNay (new)

NayNay This is a good idea for a challenge, some of these are great ideas, but other are a little out of reach for most of us. Even with one pass.

A 2000pg book is hard to find (one worth reading anyway)
I do not have anyone I could read to EVERYDAY.
And 5000pg in Jan, that is an average of 10 books or more at 300-500pgs. (for some that's hard)

I will have to think about this challenge, although I like the concept and I do like a good challenge.

message 17: by Kattibrie (new)

Kattibrie | 102 comments Yeah, the 5000+ books in january are hard too - I'll have exams in the middle of the month, so I doubt I'll be able to read that much..

message 18: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 948 comments The 5,000 pages in January was one that didn't concern me. It would be hard but with audiobooks I could do it.

message 19: by Barb (new)

Barb I like the idea of this challenge, but like several others have said, some of these monthly tasks are just out of reach. I know it's *supposed to be really hard, but if it stays as is, I doubt I'll join in.

~Jennifer~ (book_addiction) | 929 comments Okay.

1- If you can't find a 2000 page book, shoot for one over 1000 or heck go for 2. The point is pick a big book. :)
2- Any romance is fine. Anything with a love element can technically be considered a romance. It doesn't have to be a bodice ripper.

Any others?

It's supposed to be challenging. Do your best. If you can't make it all the way one month...it's no big deal. I'm not going to come after your first born or repo an organ. :)

Kattibrie | 102 comments Hm... I think I'll try this, although I'm pretty sure I won't be able to meet the 5000 pages mark for January...Count me in. Just a quick question about the substitutions - do we have to substitute the month we don't like with a category from the pother months or can we come up with a category of our own?

I may plan on doing this for part of my goal that month. I have a few moms in my neighborhood with multiples and I know the mom's would love a little break..... I know I would have when mine were little ☺

Diane L I've been thinking about this one a lot in the past week and plan to try it. I have a question about the giant book for May. Penguin has an edition of 1001 Arabian Nights that comes in three volumes. Together they total over 2500 pages. Can I read all three volumes for credit in May?

Thank you for adding mystery/suspense to the horror month. With that change I hope to complete all categories as you have defined them. That was the one I was going to alter.
