voilà, the Robin Hobb group is created!
i put a temporary reading date on the book (otherwise it doesn't show up!).

since both Candace and myself are also reading Malazan (and want time to read other books to), the starting dates will not fully fixed upfront and might change along the way.

we'll probably target 4 weeks for each medium sized book, and 6 weeks for the larger ones.

oh wow! apparently i do not get any notification when new members join, so i was surprised to find more people suddenly. welcome everyone!
Candace, clearly you and I are not the only ones who are excited to start Robin Hobb!

for those i don't know, feel free to leave an introduction here and let us know whether the whole series will be a new adventure for you or whether you will join us as of book 2,3, 4...

Hi. I just joined goodreads. My husband has been bugging me to read these for a while now. Lately I don't always have much time to read or be online, but I try to read along and pass by when I have time.

a bugging husband? well at least he's bugging you for good reasons then. :)

welcome Cordelia!

message 5: by Marina (new)

Marina As for me, Assassin's Apprentice was in my TBR list for a while, but I had no clear intention to start reading it any time soon.
But as I find it extremely difficult to decide what to read after I finish a book, I thought it will be easier to go along with group reads and actively participate in discussions, so here I am ^^

hi Marina, glad you're joining us!
i have the same, especially with a series this long, it's good to have some company!

message 7: by Laurentiu (new)

Laurentiu Lazar (laur1989) | 1 comments I often saw Robin Hobb's books while I was going through book shops and I've always been curious how she writes.

Chose Assassin's Apprentice since I wanted something different from what I read recently.

Hopefully with the help of this group I'll be reading more of her works.

message 8: by Allison (new)

Allison (rainy-day-reads) It's been a long time since I read the original trilogy - probably about 10 years. I'm tempted to re-read it now that you're all on board. Oh, how to balance new and old!?

message 9: by Hanne (new)

Hanne (hanne2) | 791 comments Mod
@Laurentiu - welcome! glad you found us. and yes, robin hobb typically had a full shelf at eye level so it's very tempting.
but also, i've always heard that her books are very good, so we should be in for a nice ride!

@allison - just go for it! (you know you want to!) :)

message 10: by Rob (new)

Rob (robzak) | 432 comments I found Robin Hobb from Sword and Laser's August pick of Assassin's Apprentice.

I've since gotten 1 of my co-workers and his wife to start reading the series (both are on Assassin's Quest) and I'm hoping another co-worker is going to start Assassin's Apprentice over Christmas.

I've been dying to have someone to talk to about the later books in Farseer and stuff from the Liveship books that I finished last month.

I'm now onto Tawny Man.

Rob, I've read everything except for the Rainwilds. I don't think my memory on the Tawny Man trilogy is very good, but I've read Liveship a couple times if you want to talk about it.

Yeah he got me to read Assassin's Apprentice and I'm currently about 1/3 into Assassin's Quest. I'll probably go onto the other trilogies some time next year but will probably read a couple other books before I start Live Ship.

Rob, DYING to talk to someone? you've got it bad!
i hope you didn't actually blackmail Tom into reading it.

Lee (kiwifirst) I am here to gossip and cause mayhem. I will probably join in some time later when you get to books I haven't read.

At least I can't post spoilers because I read the books ages ago. Apart from where Saben dies by falling off the castle wall.

Stephanie | 3 comments I saw this book club yesterday and all I was thinking was: "No, not now!! I'm in the middle of reading the Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin, can't you just wait until I'm finished?!"
But looking at my bookcase, I just couldn't resist... I love Robin Hobb! And I'm dying to read all her books again. So, here I am, ready to start! George will wait ;)
Nice to meet all of you!

It's always a struggle for me to pick between all the books I want to read at once, so I can understand your dilemma. I suspect most people on Good Reads can.

Welcome!

hoi stéphanie!
i think we all know what it feels like. although between the robin hobbs, i think there should be some time to read something else as well. so maybe george can squeeze himself in.
we're probably going to do one per month, unless everyone finishes superquick and want to read faster of course! let's see after book 1.

ps: nice to have some more belgian blood in here :)
at least one other person who knows that Pluk van de Petteflet is one of the best book on this planet! :D

message 25: by Rob (new)

Rob (robzak) | 432 comments I'm about 6 books ahead..but I started in August. ^_^

message 26: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 3 comments @ Rob: Honestly, I love the fact that I can't choose between books. That means that there are so many great books that I can look forward to :)

@ Hanne: Pluk van de Petteflet is one of the best book ever! I probably read it about 100 times.
I will have to try to squeeze George in, because I don't think I can wait 16 months before I read the next book! It would be a torture ;)

message 27: by Hanne (new)

Hanne (hanne2) | 791 comments Mod
stephanie, i know! it's brilliant! i can't believe there are 11 (!!) people who gave Pluk a one-star rating.

alex, welcome!
do we know when the last one will be released, or just "somewhere in 2013"?

From looking at your favorite books, I think you will really enjoy Hobb's Farseer trilogy. It starts with Assassin's Apprentice but gets even better with the second book which we're reading now, Royal Assassin. One thing I really like about them is they are pretty quick reads ( if you're not reading 3 other books with them!)

message 42: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (gielske) | 28 comments Hi guys! I'm Jenny, 26, Dutch and about to start re-reading the entire realm of the elderlings collection. This way I'll be right on schedule for the release of the grand finale 'Blood of Dragons'. For extensive epic series like Hobbs, I allways like to find a group where I can talk about it while reading.

Hi Jenny! welcome.

i'm always confused about this last book, because my library had a copy of 'Drakenbloed' for ages already, so did they change the name or was the Dutch version of the book really released more than a year before the English one?

Brenda ╰☆╮ (brnda) | 15 comments Hi.....so happy to have discovered another Robin Hobb group. I have read Fitz and Fool books and the first of the Liveship books.
She has become one of my favorites...very quickly.

message 46: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (gielske) | 28 comments It was released in Dutch. Hobb does this often. This way she gets some feedback for last minute editing for the real release. Like a switch in dragon color apparently :-)
http://robinhobb.com/2012/04/blood-of...
But I must note that Dutch book translations usually aren't as good as English. I don't know if it's the translation or our language. But it changes the style or something. I returned Anne Rice to the library after 3 pages for example.

message 47: by Stacy (new)

Stacy (stacydora) Hello all!

My name is Stacy. I've already read a lot of Robin Hobb's books. But it's been almost ten years for some of them, so I think I might re-read them all.

I don't want to post any spoilers, but I will say that the Fool is one of my favorite characters from any book out there. Very unique.

Should just take me a couple days to catch up to where you guys are, then I will slow down to the groups pace and participate in the discussions. I'm excited that there is a whole group for Robin Hobb!

Interesting! I never heard that before. I guess it is a good place to get some input on and since it's small and not many people know Dutch there's a relatively small risk of spoilers circling around.

In general, I always prefer to read books in their original language (translation always changes things!). I can't do that for every language, but when the original is Dutch, English or French, i read the original. For other languages it depends, i've learned that German translates better to Dutch than to English for instance.

Hi Stacy, welcome!
It shouldn't be too big an issue to catch up, we've only done two books and we're talking it quite slow. It's more fun that way, because there's more to discuss, and you can still read plenty of other things as well (which i think is important if you're embarking on 10+ books!)
