Such a great book to start with, Diana! Now you have the other two in the trilogy to look forward to!

Diana Marques | Papéis e Letras (diana_papeiseletras) | 22 comments I am so excited that I will start reading The Two Towers right away!

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

Great! It's always best to keep going. I try to read all three once a year, but I may not get to them this year. I think Two Towers is my favorite book of the three. Enjoy!

message 6: by Diana Marques (new)

Diana Marques | Papéis e Letras (diana_papeiseletras) | 22 comments I have finally finished with The Two Towers. It was a sort of tough February, so it took me more than I expected to read this one... Now to take a break from fantasy, I'll be reading The Iron Duke by Meljean Brook.

message 7: by Diana Marques (new)

Diana Marques | Papéis e Letras (diana_papeiseletras) | 22 comments I quit The Iron Duke and I've already finished the first book of "The Mists of Avalon series", Mistress of Magic by Marion Zimmer-Bradley. I loved it so much!! :D

Diana Marques | Papéis e Letras (diana_papeiseletras) | 22 comments And I have just finished An Offer From a Gentleman, from Julia Quinn. Such a breath of fresh air! I love her romances. Always funny and witty, with good and interesting characters and the Bridgerton family is, of course, irresistible :)

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) Hi Diana & Jeannette! When you refer to JRR Tolkien, I would say 'all four' rather than three. "The Hobbit" comes first. :) It's funny, I didn't take to it in grade 9. I didn't recall any of it from school; or soak in any "Star Wars" films as a child.

Later, all that army stuff found a way to be interesting. hehe Of course there's more to Tolkien than that and I became a Trekkie too but as a child I zoned it out.

Diana Marques | Papéis e Letras (diana_papeiseletras) | 22 comments Hi C.! I already read "The Hobbit" some years ago, that is why I didn't include it ;) Now I have "The Return of the King" left to finish the trilogy and then, when I have the patience, "The Silmarillion".

I love the "Star Wars" movies, but I never got into Star Trek. I don't really know why...

message 11: by C. (Comment, never msg). (last edited Apr 19, 2013 03:50PM) (new)

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) I'm uncertain I'm interested in "Silmarillion", which seems to be a behind-the-scenes of 'middle earth'. David Eddings, an even better fantasy author (USA) released "The Rivan Codex" which goes with his own series. I collected it but don't think I read it. Anyway, my brother had a band that was successful in our region, 'Syllmarillion' with a 'Y'.

If you get Star Trek from the beginning, you fall in love with each of the 5 casts. Now Chris Pine and new actors are doing brand new films that don't follow the usual storyline and ANYONE can go to the theatre and love the experience. Anyway a random Trek show doesn't work. Try the beginning of one and it makes sense.

The oldest can seem cheezy. I'd try "Star Trek Voyager", with the female captain. Or see the first, new Star Trek movie with Chris Pine. The second looks like it's coming out soon! I'm gonna look!

Diana Marques | Papéis e Letras (diana_papeiseletras) | 22 comments I will take your advice and give Star Trek a try :)
Thanks!

Diana Marques | Papéis e Letras (diana_papeiseletras) | 22 comments Finished with The Return of the King. What an amazing ride and conclusion to an awesome story! I really loved The Lord of the Rings and I'm so glad I decided to read it this year, finally.

message 14: by C. (Comment, never msg). (last edited May 23, 2013 05:17AM) (new)

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) I'm glad you like "Return Of The King". The film is BEAUTIFUL. My fiancé & I went to town for the new Trek and it's awesome!!!! Knowledge not required on these remakes, Chris Pine (Kirk) and Zachary Quinto (Spok). But the latest is closer to the original. Trekkies will notice they draw a lot of moments from "Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan".

Presuming they continue with remnants of "III: The Search For Spok", I prefer this one. The hands-down favourite is "IV: The Voyage Home" because they return to 1980s, present day Earth but let's not get carried away. LOL!

Diana Marques | Papéis e Letras (diana_papeiseletras) | 22 comments I finished Wolf Hall today, by Hilary Mantel. I have this book since 2009 and it was about time I read it. I loved the book, the portrayal of that period, the hunger for power and the focus on Thomas Cromwell, one of the most fascinating minds of that period. Loved it!

message 16: by Diana Marques (new)

Diana Marques | Papéis e Letras (diana_papeiseletras) | 22 comments I have finished The Broken Sword by Poul Anderson and I am a little bit disapointed. The book wasn't bad, I actually liked it, but I was influenced by the reviews I've read before, saying it was awesome and even superior to Tolkien. I shouldn't have read it with my expectations that high because I spent the whole book trying to compare it to Tolkien, when there is no possible comparison. Still, I enjoyed it.

message 17: by Diana Marques (new)

Diana Marques | Papéis e Letras (diana_papeiseletras) | 22 comments In a couple of hours I started and finished The Tempest by William Shakespeare.

message 18: by Diana Marques (new)

Diana Marques | Papéis e Letras (diana_papeiseletras) | 22 comments I have just finished O Festim dos Corvos by George R. R. Martin, which is the portuguese translation of the first half of A Feast for Crows.

message 19: by Diana Marques (new)

Diana Marques | Papéis e Letras (diana_papeiseletras) | 22 comments For the last book of my list I read The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley and I fell completely in love with it. It is a wonderful book, an amazing story and I loved every second I spent reading it.

And I finished this challenge! Yay for me! :D

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) Thank for you reading a Canadian author! :) I collected all her work. Like most of my library (which is its own building, seen in my thread); I haven't tried her yet. I'm glad she's great.

I surpassed my challenge for Mount Ararat and am 3 books away from finishing 2 mountains after that. What everybody is doing is keeping going! No one stops seeing how far they can go. :) It is EXCELLENT that you read a variety of material and languages! Yay Diana!

message 21: by Diana Marques (new)

Diana Marques | Papéis e Letras (diana_papeiseletras) | 22 comments That's a good ideia! I will also keep going and see how many books I can read. This year has been a bit rough for me, because I have had some reading slumps, and I'm not reading as much as I am used to.

I highly recomend that you read Susanna Kearsley! This book was amazing for me. This year I will be reading another Canadian author, Margaret Atwood. I read Oryx and Crake last year and I absolutely loved it. So this year I will be reading The Handmaid's Tale and see what it's about :)

Congratulations, Diana! As C. mentions...everyone seems to have caught mountain-fever and just keeps climbing to see how many mountains they can conquer.

message 24: by Diana Marques (new)

Diana Marques | Papéis e Letras (diana_papeiseletras) | 22 comments Although I have finished this challenge, I want to see how many more books I can read that have been sitting in my shelves for too long. So, the 13th book I read was The King Stag, by Marion Zimmer Bradley. I liked it, but I didn't feel as captivated as I felt with the previous two books...

message 25: by Diana Marques (new)

Diana Marques | Papéis e Letras (diana_papeiseletras) | 22 comments The Handmaid's Tale: check!

message 26: by C. (Comment, never msg). (last edited Oct 08, 2013 08:24AM) (new)

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) There you go reading Canadians again. :) You really should join our reading challenge. Unlike most January to new year's eve stints, we go from Canada day to Canada day. It didn't start long ago. Count your reading since July 1st! Please call me Carolyn, from the blog 'RIEDEL Fascination'. http://cmriedel.wordpress.com/2012/09...

message 27: by Diana Marques (new)

Diana Marques | Papéis e Letras (diana_papeiseletras) | 22 comments And speaking of canadians... Alice Munro won the Nobel Prize yesterday! Another author to include on my list of books I want to read... :)

message 28: by C. (Comment, never msg). (last edited Oct 28, 2013 08:16AM) (new)

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) Good for her. Have her in my belongings, haven't read yet. Pertaining to Americans, my fiancé's favourite author died. I'm sorry for all fans' loss of Tom Clancy.
