This was my third time to read it, and I hadn't realized until I read one of these discussion threads one very obvious point -- on the surface May seems like a victim. But in fact she manages to get everything she wants!
This is my third time reading it as well. It's more obvious now how early on May is aware of Newland's infatuation with Ellen.
