Discuss a connection you can make with your text, either with yourself, another text, or the world.

Please consult your rubric and models to ensure that you are doing your best work!

For a “4”: Did I….
• Write a topic sentence that provided the title, author, and genre of my text?
• Provide context of what is happening in the text, so my reader understands what I’m talking about?
• Find a direct quote from the text that proves my idea?
• Thoroughly explain the significance of my quote/how it proves my idea?
• Check for correct punctuation and spelling?

Matthew | 34 comments In the fiction book Schooled by Paul Langan the main character Lionel relates to me. In the book Lionel loves to play basketball and I love to play basketball. I always go to the park and play with people just like Lionel. When Lionel says, "One day I will join the NBA". This shows that Lionel really likes to play basketball. I would really like to join the NBA but, it would take a lot of practice and hard work. I think Lionel could make the NBA and I think he could do a lot better then me.

Jevel Gilbert | 18 comments In the memoir novel called Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. I have one connection to the book I'm reading and it's getting in trouble by my brother. The muslim people were demonstrating in Iran against the Shah. Marji and her sister were also involved .The Demonstrates were killed and Marji and her sister got in trouble too by there mother. Marji stated " But in fact it was really our own who had attacked us''(39). I had the same connection with Marji. My Brother and I were playing outside for little while. Instead, we played for to long then we were suppose to. My brother went inside and told on me that I was playing for to long. I got in trouble by my Brother and felt betrayed.

Mark | 33 comments In the fantasy book, The Alchemyst by Michael Scott, a connection that I can make with one of the characters, Josh Newman is, that we both like to use modern day technology. Josh Newman is a teenage boy who has a twin. Josh always loves to use his phone or his computer whenever he can. Also Josh is a can be very calm but at times when he feels uncomfortable he quickly jumps into action. “There’s no signal kook she pointed you can actually see the battery draining. Ya I now my laptop, my iPod and my watch are dead. My watch isn’t dead, that’s because it’s wound up(126).” Like josh we both love to use modern day technology. I love to explore the web, and check my email just like josh. Also we both love to play games on our phone. This shows how I can relate to josh and some ways.

Jack Brill | 41 comments In the book "Persepolis" by Marjane Satrapi if I were to make a connection to the main character or the protagonist I would say her and I are very dedicated to something or if her or I are in an argument we would not let it go until we understand or until we are proven right. The main character deals with many problems in her home country of Iran and so does her parents and nanny. This part does not relate to me but another reason her nanny has a really rough life is because she likes this guy that is not in her social class so she can not marry him and she really likes him and he liked her before he knew that she was poor.

Emily | 14 comments In the book The Story Of Blima by Shirley Russak Wachtel if i had to make one connection it would be that , me and Blima the main character both have alot of siblings. And also, she's the "good one" from her siblings and i'm also considered as the "good one."

Melanie M. (MissMello) | 21 comments In the book Persepolis 2 by Marjane Satrapi. a connection I would make in this book is with the main character because from her being confused if she is for or against veils I also had been that way but the topic was not about veils. She has a nanny to baby sit her and so do I, but not anymore; I'm to old. Main character (Marjane) she dealt with the a lot in her country.

Trinity Burgos | 31 comments In the non-fiction book Ten Real Life Stories illustrated by Hal Taylor, I would make a text to self connection with the author of this story,''Do It Better'' by Ben Carson, M.D. with Cecil Murphey. I would make a text to self connection with this story because it mostly talks about how when he was a child in elementry school, he would think of himself as an uneducated student and the dumbest person in his class. Which led him to doing worse. In a way I can make a text to self connection because I remember feeling the same way when I was in elementry school, because I was always afraid to get called on or read something outloud in front of my classmates because I thought everysingle little thing that I said would be wrong. However, he later turned out becoming something better of himself and instead of doubting himself he began working harder and ended up becoming famous. In his case instead of me really becoming ''famous'', i just starting taking things more seriously and started working harder in my grades and ended up having grades i'd never thought I could get before. text states ''Bennie, you can do anything they can do-only you could do it better!''. This quotes shows that his mother is trying to explain to him that even though he may think people are better than him he can always work harder and become better than the others. This quote proves that if you try your best at doing something you really want to achieve, you can do better better on it then you ever thought you did.

Justin Yu | 20 comments In the fantasy book I am Legend by Richard Matheson the main character Robert Neville is stuck in a lonely world. There is an incurable plaque that turn people into mannequins like creatures and at night time, they attack. They are frozen during the day so Robert collects his resources during the day to survive. I can somewhat relate Robert to me because he is in a lost world. Sometimes I feel very lost and lonely but I can eventually find the right people for me. On the blurb it says "The last man on earth is not alone." This tells me that Robert maybe the last person to live and build a new society but there are various challenges he must face. His challenges are finding survivors and fighting off those creatures at the same time.

Kailey | 23 comments In the realistic fiction book "Getting the girl" written by Markus Zusak, the main character Cameron is stuck in the middle. He is in love with his brothers girlfriend, he visits his brother who moved away when he needs the time and space to think. This can relate to me because I usually because i would go to another family member to clear my mind off a sibling."Secretly I preferred only Steve to know about it than me telling Rube and Sarah"(28). He had top keep it a secret because he knew it would mess up the trust between the siblings he still lives under the same roof as.

Elva C. | 40 comments In the non-fiction memoir, Red Scarf Girl, by Ji-Li Jiang, Ji-Li is facing bad problems in her life. Her mom is sick, and she can barely move around, and her dad was taken to prison for committing a counterrevolutionary crime. A connection that I would like to make with Ji-Li in the book is that Ji-Li is very caring and protective, like a character from the fantasy book, Untamed, by P.C Cast and Kristin Cast. In the book, Ji-Li states, "How are you feeling, Mom? Do you want some water? I wiped her forehead with my handkerchief..." (185). This quote shows how caring Ji-Li is to her mother. She wants to do everything that will make her feel better. In the book Untamed, the protagonist Zoey is very caring also. When she hears there is trouble, she rushes over to that person to see if he/she is alright. This both shows how the 2 different characters are both caring.

The nonfiction biography book "Marion Jones: The Fastest Woman in the World" by Bill Gutman is about Marion Jones's life growing to be what she is today as a track and field star. Marion Jones was born in Los Angeles on October,12,1975. She had some trouble when she was younger. She had to move for free education and her parents had to work far away to make money for a good family living. Finally, she came to New York, America in 1968 and then moved to Los Angeles in 1970. Growing up, Marion was very good in basketball, her height and power helped her to success. She got the best records in her middle school for track and basketball. Soon, she was the California state best for track and basketball. After that, she was known as a professional athlete. That's when her career started for real. On page 11, the text said, "It was a tough life, with Marion Hulse being raised by distant relatives who became her guardians." The text from the book showed how Marion Jones was growing up in tough times. She had tons of things that made her feel uncomfortable. This situation makes me think of the book "Shaq Uncut: My Story." That's because this book is similar due to the character's feelings growing up to be a star. Shaquille O'Neal grew up with tons of trouble like being too big and Marion grew up with some poverty issues, they both connect to the same case. The character Shaquille O'Neal from the book "Shaq Uncut: My Story" is similar to the character Marion in the book "Marion Jones: The Fastest Woman in the World."

Sara | 17 comments In the fiction "Charlottes Web" By E.B White. I can make a connection with Fern because they own a farm and there was a pig named Wilbur but the dad wanted to kill it instead of keeping it. Then Fern begged her dad to keep it and that she would take care of it and everything and feed it. Then her dad said fine and that if she didn't take care of it then he would have to kill it. Fern always took care of it and everything and fed it. The connection i can make is that i had a pet (hamster) and i really loved it and i had it for like a really long time and it was my favorite pet and then it got really sick so my dad wanted to let it go. I told my dad no and i wanted to keep it and that i would take care of it and make it better and clean and everything and i did. So i got to keep it and feed it and take care of it, i was really happy it felt better and got cured. Just like when Fern got to keep Wilbur because she said she would keep it and take care of it and feed it instead of her dad killing it.

Monica | 43 comments Moira Young's fantasy book, Dust Lands is a good read! Saba, a teenager has spent practically her whole life living with her pa, older brother, Lugh, and younger sister, Emmi. She loves to follow Lugh everywhere and wouldn't leave him alone for just one bit. Just recently, Lugh got captured by four men on horseman and they claimed that he was "special." Saba is now determined to go off and search for him. But she also wound off in the wrong hands. Some evil couple bound her hands and legs after putting in some poison in her food, and this caused her to fall asleep. They also tortured her 9 year old sister, Emmi. They claims that they need Saba for her fierce personality and skills. I can make a connection with this book to another book. Dust Lands can be compared to The Hunger Games in many ways. Katniss Everdeen in that book had to look for Peeta in the games and got stopped by Clove and Cato. They tried to kill her, but stopped short. And in Dust Lands, Saba is smart enough not to let the couple hurt her a lot. Her and Emmi pulled off some sort of plan. "I bin trying to think of a plan......" (123). Saba is really trying to put her life at risk instead of Emmi's. She knows that if Lugh was here, he would have done the same thing. This quote shows the thoughts of Saba frantically thinking of a plan to save Emmi and herself. This can also be shown in a different way in The Hunger Games Trilogy too. Katniss gets frusterated when no one listens to her. She is also a girl that has a strong personality with lots of skills.

Anson Wong | 12 comments In the fantasy book Artemis Fowl written Eoin Colfer. I have a connection with Artemis Fowl because the only things we both think of is mostly mischievious and has friends who would die for the saftey of others but also his problem with controling his feelings. "control puberty? pfft if you manage that you'll be the first."(7) he is like me of how my problems of controling feelings of puberty like liking a girl or wanting privacy and getting mad. but like artemis fowl i am able to tolerate many things.

Ben Friedman | 25 comments In the short story “Do It Better” By Ben Carson M.D, Ben’s mother was disappointed that Ben did not do as well as she would have liked on his report card. His mom said to him, “If you keep on getting these kinds of grades your going to spend the rest of your life on skid row, or at best sweeping floors at a factory. That’s not the kind of life I want for you.” I can relate to this because like Bens mom my mother will never let me fail. In addition my mother tends to nag me if I get grades that are under her standers. My mom has very high standers for me and without a good education I am not going to get very far in the world. And that she does not want me stocking shelves at a store. When Benjamin’s mother said he must read two books every week he was upset. She said, “You’re not living up to your potential, so I am going to see that you do.” In addition I can relate because much like Bens mom my mom pushes me to do things I do not want to do. She does this because she knows I can succeed at what ever I put my mine to.

Seige | 17 comments In the story ''Rocket Boy'' By Homer Hickam, Jr. I make a perfect connection with the main character, because our hobby/activities are almost the same. For example, we both like science , rockets , and we would both love to build one. As a young kid he had such an amazing imagination as i always did when I was young. He always seemed dedicated to being an amateur rocketry and now he is in pro rocketry. Yet, I also have a disconnection with the main character, because unlike him I am good at sports , I love being involved in sports activities.
