Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Hello all,

I have closed the group store for now.

I would like to completely revamp it soon and when I do I will wipe everything out and start again.

Any other suggestions how we can make the store more useful will be most welcome

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Fantasy

Edit - oh yes, Thriller

Some overlap probably.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Are you referring to my grip on life Ignite?

message 4: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Only you know that! (and the little weed!)
Are you old enough to get the reference?

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments I remember little weed. I had reservations about that potting shed.

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments What about the books such as Alice Parker's Metamorphosis or Bernard and the Bibble both by "our authors" or books by another of "our authors" Tiffany Towers which categories would they fit in?

message 13: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Hmm. Children/YA?

message 14: by Michael (new)

message 18: by Marianne (new)

Marianne Wheelaghan (httpwwwgoodreadscomMarianneW) | 106 comments The list looks pretty much all there to me. Will you include non-fiction, like history/biographies etc or will it just be novels? Yep, historical fiction seems to be missing :)

message 19: by Alan (new)

Alan Hardy | 75 comments Obviously any one book could go in a number of categories?

message 20: by Marianne (new)

Marianne Wheelaghan (httpwwwgoodreadscomMarianneW) | 106 comments Hi Simon, just a quick question – and, yes, and I am a tad embarrassed to ask this– is the Goodreads UK Kindle Group Store a newish thing? I can't remember seeing it before. I know I've not been around lately and when I am around I do seem to get lost a little bit, but old or new, it seems a very good idea - and apart from the great recommendations, maybe my books can be showcased there one day too ;o)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Choose as many categories as is workable for you Simon. Then have the author tell you which one of them they want their book to be slotted into.

Otherwise you'll be having someone like Darren wanting his in the sci-fi/fan/rom/com/travel/withatwistoflemon category.

It's been around for nearly as long as the group has Marianne. The problem is, the group is a victim of its own success and there are now masses of threads to scroll through. I never go more than half way down - I stop at book Recommendations"

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments The group store link has always been right at the top of the list of discussion threads. :)

Yikes!! I can't believe I missed it - I am blushing! I am going to have to pay more attention...

Ok, I am going to hunt this down now because for some reason i can only see the books listed at the bottom of the UK Amazon Kindle Forum page and the "currently reading ones" at the top " but no group store. No store either when I click the discussion threads - at least not as it looks when I follow the link Simon gave at the beginning ...

message 26: by Simon (Highwayman) (last edited Jan 20, 2013 10:03AM) (new)

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Well, I put the store together right at the beginning but never really applied any focus to it. I'm still not quite sure what it brings to the party.

As Patti says, my plan was to get authors to post a link to the book on amazon UK (a prerequisite) and tell me what category they want it in.

I'm just not sure why anyone would bother using it to be honest..... except we get a tiny commission every time someone buys through it which I can use to do competitions etc.

message 27: by Marianne (new)

Marianne Wheelaghan (httpwwwgoodreadscomMarianneW) | 106 comments Hi Simon, sorry, no explanation needed for me and so sorry if I sounded critical, I didn't mean to. I'm pretty dense around forums and such until I get the hang of them. For what it is worth, the store sounds a great idea and another way to spread the word about our books, and if the forum can get a wee commission all the better... I think I'd use it as soon as I get the hang of finding it ;o)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments As to categories, I think Rosen sussed them rather well with her book awards.

What's wrong with that? I can't see why it wasn't on the original list.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Hmm....

I can see I will end up with a lot of categories if I'm not careful!

message 31: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments You told me you were always careful!

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments Simon (Highwayman) wrote: "Hmm....

Some can be combined -
Crime/Thriller/Adventure and SciFi/Fantasy.
How about the five most popular categories & "other"

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments How about great, so-so and bleh?

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Actually I like great/so-so/blah but it would just open up another can of worms.

message 35: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Worms? Bleh!

D.D. Chant (DDChant) | 7663 comments Rosemary wrote: "How about great, so-so and bleh?"

Lol!

*Note to self: must be VERY nice to Rosemary so my books don't get listed under 'so-so' or 'bleh'!!!*

message 37: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments And what a bout a Humour category?

We aren't all serious, you know. Well, not all the time anyway.

That category is 'Pratchettesque'

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Humphriesque, if you please.

message 43: by A.L. (new)

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 1608 comments Lol.

Fantasy
Thriller
Horror
YA/juvenile
Romance
Erotica
Non fiction

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Patti (A Fine Pear) wrote: "Humphriesque, if you please."

Does thus mean in a few books time we might be looking at Sir Darren?

message 45: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments I wonder about Y/A
Could authors just mark their book as 'suitable for Y/A' ?
That way we'd do away with a category.
Same with Humour. For example I'd class Will's books as Fantasy, but with Humour.

message 46: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I agree Jim.
(Be careful with him, people. He won't be used to women agreeing with him!)

message 47: by Sara (new)

Sara Boyd (saraboydauthor) | 1211 comments In that case I agree as well. Great idea, Jim.

message 48: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments There is a very distinct Y/A category though.

Although I'm not sure any of our authors actually write in it.

Jim | 21809 comments Louise-Lesley (Elle) wrote: "There is a very distinct Y/A category though.

One of the best definitions of Y/A is 'Is this book you've written one you'd like your mother to read'

I think the problem is that there is 'Young Adult' and there are books that are 'Suitable for Young Adult'
The first category I never read, (I'm not sure we had them back then anyway) and my daughters tended to ignore them, mainly because they worked their way through my books.

message 50: by Elle (last edited Jan 26, 2013 05:10AM) (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments There is a difference between Suitable and Y/A - I wouldn't exactly class that as a good definition.
