I thought a discussion string about how to do some of the things we do in posts and blogs on Goodreads. If you see a post or status update from somebody in Goodreads and wonder…”How’d they do that?” Ask the question here and, hopefully, somebody who knows will be able to respond quickly.

Some of us old dogs are ready to learn new tricks… It’s just hard to figure out where to go to be taught new tricks.

Q. How do I link to a book or an author?

A. Above the text box you'll see "add book/author". Click on the link and you'll see two tabs. The first is book. Type in the name of the book, the author or the ISBN number and then click on the search button. You can generate either a text link to the book or a picture of the book cover. The default is a text link. If you want the book cover, just select "cover". On the author tab, type in the name of the author and select either link or photo.

Q. How do I put a spoiler tag over something?

A. Right before the words you want to hide behind the spoiler you type in < spoiler > and right after the words you are hiding you type < /spoiler >

Type just as above but leave out the spaces.

I am just bumping this thread up so members know that it is here. If you ever want to find out how to do something on Goodreads, maybe you will find the answer here.

Tresdivas | 21 comments I'm doing this wrong. I signed up (perhaps in the wrong area) to read 30 books this year, but I don't know how to enter the books...

Hi Ruth, when you sign up for the challenge, it asks you to create a shelf name (ex. AAA 2020 is what I use). Every time you finish a book, just add it to that shelf and it will automatically be counted for the challenge. If you signed up for a challenge but didn't create a shelf name, you should be able to go back into the challenge and edit to add a shelf name.

I'm not sure which challenge you signed up for, but Action Adventure Aficionados have our own yearly challenge which you can sign up for towards the top of our home page under challenges: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...

***I just checked and it does show that you signed up...just need to add a shelf name for yourself if you haven't already and then add all your books read to that shelf.

Tresdivas | 21 comments I added the name : Ruth's AAA 2020

Now, where do I go to find that & add books?
I'm sorry.

Go to the page for the book you read. Under the picture of the book cover is a green drop down box. click on the arrow to drop down the menus, find your shelf, and put a checkmark in the box next to it.

Tresdivas | 21 comments I am so sorry. I still am having problems figuring this out.

Where can I find my shelf name to add the books?

It's ok Ruth, I've been on here for 10 years and still learning new stuff all the time.

There are several ways to add a book to your shelf.
1) Go to the specific book's homepage. In the upper left had corner underneath the book cover photo is a drop down green box. Click on the arrow and all of your shelves should appear. Just click the box next to your "Ruth's AAA 2020" box and it will be automatically added to the challenge.

2) From your Bookshelf on your profile home page. Find the book that you want to add and click edit under the "Shelves" column. Your shelf list will appear and click the box next to "Ruth's AAA 2020" box.

You just add the challenge books the same exact way that you add any of your other books to shelves that you have created. I checked out your bookshelf and Ruth's AAA 2020 is definitely there...just add the books that you have read to it.

Hope this helps :)
