1814 promises to be another eventful season, but not, This Author believes, for Anthony Bridgerton, London's most elusive bachelor, who has shown no indication that he plans to marry.

And in truth, why should he? When it comes to playing the consummate Rake, nobody does it better...

--Lady Whistledown's Society Papers,
April 1814
But this time, the gossip columnists have it wrong. Anthony Bridgerton hasn't just decided to marry--he's even chosen a wife! The only obstacle is his intended's older sister, Kate Sheffield--the most meddlesome woman ever to grace a London ballroom. The spirited schemer is driving Anthony mad with her determination to stop the betrothal, but when he closes his eyes at night, Kate is the woman haunting his increasingly erotic dreams...

Contrary to popular belief, Kate is quite sure that reformed rakes do not make the best husbands--and Anthony Bridgerton is the most wicked rogue of them all. Kate is determined to protect her sister--but she fears her own heart is vulnerable. And when Anthony's lips touch hers, she's suddenly afraid she might not be able to resist the reprehensible rake herself...

hey Dawn
Printed edition of all 8 Bridgerton plus their mother's story to be release this April. I think they were only available as ebooks before.

The Bridgertons Happily Ever After by Julia Quinn

Cheryl (cawils_99) I'll be reading.

Lauren (laurenjberman) Will be lurking as I've read and loved it. My second favorite in the series.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Oh, I want to read this one again. However, I was going to wait for the combination of all the epilogues before I read the epilogue to this one.

message 11: by Susan (susayq ~), Moderator (new) - rated it 4 stars

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 6062 comments Is that how we're reading them? Doing all the second epis last or reading after the book it goes with?

message 12: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments **shrugs** I don't know, Susan. I have some of the epilogues, but not all of them. I thought I'd wait until I could get they all bound together.

Currently all the epilogues are available as ebooks except for The duke and I and the last book, On the Way to the Wedding. I've read all of them and I don't think it would matter if you read the epilogue's after you've read the book that it goes with or after you've read all the books but I'm thinking it might be cheaper for those who will buy it to wait for Happily Ever After rather than buying each epilogue individually.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Lisa Kay’s Questions & Comments for Chapters 1 - 7

1. Amazing. Even knowing the fate of Edmund Bridgerton, since I’ve read this book several times before, it still brings tears to my eyes when I read that Prologue. Ms. Quinn uses an economy of words to set the stage and still deliver the emotional impact of the situation.

I guess I fell in love with Anthony’s father not only because he married Violet so young, but because he chose not to be a distant father. Instead of the typical English peer, he expressed his love and devotion to his family and wanted to be with them. Lord, I’m tearing up again! Comments.

P.S. Boring medical info on bee stings: (view spoiler)

2. How are you liking Anthony? Can you understand his fear of death at an early age?

3. I must admit, the very first time I read Mrs. Whistledown’s comments in the first book, I was, like, “Okay.” They didn’t bother me, I liked them, but they didn’t WOW me, either. (Of course, they did on re-read in our last “buddy read,” but that is because I knew what was coming. However, with this installment in the series, I think Mrs. W. really starts to shine. Such a crack up that – perversely – being insulted in her gossip column is a GOOD thing! Comments.

4. What do you think of Kate? Is she jealous of her sister Edwina? Can you love someone unconditionally and still be a tiny bit jealous? How did you like Kate’s dialogue with her step-mother, Mary?

5. Ah! So Edwina is a bookworm. Makes me love her all the more. Think she will find her scholar in London?

BOOK QUOTE:
“Which is that a husband can break a heart with far greater intensity than a mere suitor.” She smiled – a small, knowing sort of smile – then added, “Don’t you think?”

“Having never been married, I am certainly not in a position to speculate.”

“Shame, shame, Mr. Bridgerton. That is the worst sort of evasion.”

“Was it? I rather thought it might be the best. I am clearly losing my touch.”

“That, I fear, will never be a worry.” Kate finished the rest of her lemonade. It was a small glass; Lady Hartside, their hostess, was notoriously stingy.

“You are far too generous,” he said.

She smiled, a real smile this time. “I am rarely accused of that Mr. Bridgerton.”

He laughed. Right out loud in the middle of the ballroom. Kate realized with discomfort that they were suddenly the object of numerous curious stares.
6. Oh, that Colin Bridgerton! Me thinks he is just a little more methodical – yet mischievous – than his brothers. You? Remember, he is the only one with green eyes. The World Traveler. The Risk Taker. **sigh** Ms. Quinn was so good with their introductory scene, I was half wishing Kate would fall for him instead. Nevertheless, do you think Colin was playing a bit of the Matchmaker with Kate and Anthony when he went to his brother after talking with Kate? Or was he just stirring the pot?

7. Which scene did you prefer? The one in the Drawing Room between Kate & Anthony, or the disaster at The Serpentine river? Ah. Such a shame; just when Anthony was beginning to feel something.

8. Oh, my! Kate’s pumping her sister for information and Anthony had a wet dream nightmare of Kate! Why are these two so oblivious to their own pull toward one another? It is just a matter that they both made up their minds and are determined to stick to it?

9. I thought tons that happened in Chapter 7, including a lot of honesty. Sure, some of it was funny, but some of it was painful. Kate had a moment of naiveté, but grew up fast. And Anthony had a few epiphanies himself. Yet, despite several moments of regret, he still sent flowers – and that note! – to Edwina the next day. Comments.

Dawn (Kat N Hat) (katnhat) | 506 comments I'm only up to question 6

1. The prolouge
I was right there with you Lisa Kay. I thought to my self if you are crying on page 4 that right there is the sign of a good book.

2. How are you liking Anthony? Can you understand his fear of death at an early age? I am liking him it is hard to reconcile the two halfs of him. On one hand he is all "I am a rake and I am just out for my own fun" but then he is all moralistic about it that he doesn't want to hurt anyones little sister.
The part about him worring about death at an early age seems like a big ominus warning that something similar is going to happen. He is going to get stung, he is going to get gravely ill and Kate is going to think she has lost him... but some miricle will happen to make a HEA.

3. Mrs. Whistledown’s Column
I love the column. I lookforward to them at the begining of eac chapter. I was worried for a bit there wan't one at the prologue.

4. What do you think of Kate? It was wierd I was actually beliving that she was willing to settle down into spinsterhood or poor life in the country. I think she did love her sister, but was also realistic enough to know she wasn't going to have her own cinderalla story.

5. Ah! So Edwina is a bookworm. Makes me love her all the more. Think she will find her scholar in London?
I am holding out hope for a HEA for everyone.

6. Oh, that Colin Bridgerton! I think he was more stiring hte pot rather than matchmaking.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Ah, Dawn, here you were worried about keeping up and you are the first to post. LOL!

#1 – Good point!

#2 – Yes, he has some duality going on there.

#3 – Yes, but Mrs. W. didn’t have a column then. Still, I see why.

#4 – Yes, liking - and appreciating - Kate, even more on this re-read.

#5 – Always! LOL! ☺

#6 – Really? I think it was a bit of both. He's pretty crafty, and I don't think he liked what his brother decided at White's. **shrugs** I don't know.

Okay lets see
1. I like Edmund, too. He seemed to be a fine gentleman, a wonderful husband, and devoted father. I look forward to his and Violet's short story in Happily Ever After. (I'm not sure but I hope it will be their story)
2. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Anthony (I have weakness to a rakish gentleman type). I can understand his fear, after all he lost his father (and his whole world) when he was just beginning to be be a man, and then thrust into responsibility as a head of family and viscountry. I think his fear is more like accumulation of being lost without his father's guidance.
3. I think Lady Whistledown’s column in this book is the funniest of all four. The commentary was just so witty and suited Kate and Anthony's vibrant (stubborn) character.
4. Kate is my favorite Bridgerton heroine. She is so fierce . I don't think she jealous of Edwina. She just a bit over-protective of he sister. And to be honest, based on his reputation alone, Anthony is not very promising as doting husband-type, can't blame her to be a bit cautious of him.
5. Edwina is so sweet, I love her relationship with Kate, that is how sisters supposed to be.
6. LoL, I think Kate made Colin a bit nervous so he wanted that his fearless brother squirm, too.
As for Kate and Colin, I don't think so. Colin is a mischievous, yes, but not stubborn (not really), while Kate is more bull-headed, she need someone that as strong-willed as she is.
7. The Serpentine River, just because The Most Eligible Bachelor brought down by an unnamed dog, LoL
8. That was funny scene IMO, especially that apparrently it seems that Newton is much more interesting topic for the viscount that invirogating Kate, LoL
9. Haven't get into that part yet,I'll be bcak at you when I do :)

#1 – Oh, I hadn’t heard that. I don’t know. Last update I had was that JQ didn’t think it would be that popular, given his “early” demise. But, I would read it!

#2 – Well said.

#3 – Yes, this one stands out in my memory.

#4 – I would not say Kate is jealous-jealous of Edwina; she truly loves her. Maybe, “wistfully” jealous? If that makes sense. Just the impression I got when she enjoys her flowers, and that is why Anthony giving her some was such a hit.

#5 – Ditto!

#6 – Yes, she did make him squirm. Excellent point about the Kate/Colin match up! So, yes, Anthony is a better fit for her.

#7 – **snortsnort**

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Lisa Kay’s Questions & Comments for Chapters 8 – 15

10. Was Anthony’s apology good enough for you? Amusing – and interesting – or would that be that it is most telling that she thought he was apologizing for the kiss? And he had never consider it. LOL!

11. The Bridgerton Pall Mall game and the Mallet of Death were too funny! The dialogue was realistic, snappy, flowed easily, and I never felt it sounded “present day,” as is often the case went authors get clever. I could easily picture the characters and the setting. It was certainly one of the most memorable of this book, long after the pages are closed. How about you? Did you have a favorite quote?

12. A boon? Oh, he is a bit of a devil, isn’t he? LOL! (view spoiler) Still, as boons go, it was a good one. Comments.

BOOK QUOTES:
And then there was Kate Sheffield.

The bane of his existence.

And the object of his desires.

All at once.

---------

“What happened?”

“He was...he was…” Kate stumbled over her words, unsure of how to describe what exactly he’d done. And then she said something she’d never thought possible: “He was a hero.”

---------

“Never a ninny, Kate. Even when I thought you the most insufferable female creature on the planet, I had no doubts about your intelligence.”

13. Ah! The transitions from “soulless, reprehensible rake” - to “sensitive, caring, and principled...” - to “heroic…” From “a menace to society” - to “bane of his existence” - to “friends.” Were they convincing for you?

14. I loved the information about how Mary would take Kate to her mother’s grave to ‘report.’ Another image I could easily picture. And you?

15. What did you think about Kate’s road to her epiphany about her feelings toward Anthony, her withdrawing her objection about him courting her sister? Her thinking herself selfish because she wanted to keep him for herself, and then her anticipated agony of having to see him married to her sister?

16. What did you think of the (view spoiler) scene? Lord, I’m so glad he took her to the gazebo afterwards! Still, in reality, he should have had a physician summoned, to make it more believable.

17. Oh, Anthony! Self-satisfied, unworried Anthony! I thought he was going to totally blow it when he visited Kate to have their little “talk” and give her her engagement ring. Instead, he only half blew it. LOL! I must confess, my memory of the rest of the book is a bit vague, so it is going to be a surprise to me. Any guesses?
