Anna Erishkigal (annaerishkigal) Greetings Space Opera Fans!

Yay! I got my teenager addicted to Doctor Who! Okay, it's not quite Space Opera unless you include the non-Earth episodes, but it's a step in the right direction, planet-hopping, time-travelling Time Lords with two hearts. And all of her friends think it's totally AWESOME that I've been a 'Whovian' since the Third Doctor. 3:-)

Who says assimilation doesn't work?

So now it's time to keep up the good work and explore what other assimilation tools great books we can use as conversation openers with the young people in our lives. This month's winner is Tree Cat Wars by David Weber and Jane Lindskold.

Tree Cat Wars (Star Kingdom) by David Weber David Weber Jane Lindskold

"On pioneer planet Sphinx, ruined lands and the approach of winter force the now Landless Clan to seek new territory. They have one big problem—there’s nowhere to go. Worse, their efforts to find a new home awaken the enmity of the closest treecat clan—a stronger group who’s not giving up a single branch without a fight

Stephanie Harrington, the treecats’ greatest advocate, is off to Manticore for extensive training—and up to her ears in challenges there. That leaves only Stephanie’s best friends, Jessica and Anders, to save the treecats from themselves. And now a group of xenoanthropologists is once again after the great secret of the treecats—that they are intelligent, empathic telepaths—and their agenda will lead to nothing less that treecat exploitation..."

I read this last year and really liked it. May be the best of the trilogy. It seems to me the relationship dynamics are very realistic. Also, we get a lot of new aspects of the cats. And a good bit of suspense.

Jane Lindskold, the co-author, is on Goodreads and has answered some interesting questions on her author page. I have no idea how much of the book is hers and how much is David Weber's, but I suspect a lot of the actual writing is hers.

Anna, maybe we can get her to do an interview for us.

Jen Johnson | 2 comments I really enjoyed Treecat Wars - the treecats are perhaps my favourite part of the Honorverse, so I'm thrilled every time we get to see them in their native habitat. The books in this trilogy are YA so have a 'coming of age' element that is well handled.

Lexxi Kitty (lexxikitty) | 43 comments Loved the original short story. Wherever it was that I found it. Then came "A Beautiful Friendship", an expansion of the short story (I'd add links but apparently the "add book/author" isn't working right now).

I was somewhat on edge, but the expansion book still ended up being five stars. "Fire Season" was also a fun five star story.

This thread is about Treecat Wars, though, which I read 2 years ago (well, 12/9/13-12/30/13). Treecat Wars seemed to reinforce some of the things I was having some slight troubles with in the earlier books. And that was the teen angst/relationship angle that I try to avoid. I never particularly cared about Stephanie and Ander's relationship. Still, there was enough there for me to give it four stars. The book, not the relationship. Getting the four stars.

It's the only Weber series I still read (well, it has been 2 years since the last book, that's kind of a long time, especially when it was 1) 2011; 2) 2012; 3) 2013), i.e., no history of long breaks between books). If the series is actually done, then I guess I don't read Weber any longer. Which is kind of sad since I have read 44 of them. 3 of which I gave five stars to. The later books just got on my nerves, info-dump wise. And how often 500-600 page books seemed to have nothing really happening.

ETA: hmms. odd. I read this book but my rating is not turning up next to my name like in other people's posts.

Rion (orion1) | 108 comments So I have to ask. Does this book stand alone or do I need to go back and read more of Webers Honorverse series? So far I've only completed the first book, On Basilisk Station. Also Lexxi Kitty what were the 3 books of Weber's you gave five stars? Are those books stand alone or did prior books help earn them that fifth star?

Lexxi Kitty (lexxikitty) | 43 comments Treecat Wars is the third book in the Stephanie Harrington series. Stephanie being an ancestor of Honor Harrington, the lead in the main Honorverse series.

The three I gave five stars to are (1) A Beautiful Friendship (book one of the Stephanie Harrington series); (2) Fire Season (book two of the Stephanie Harrington series); and (3) Off Armageddon Reef (book 1 of Safehold).

If you are looking for a stand alone by Weber, I did give high marks to The Apocalypse Troll.

Since the Stephanie Harrington series occurs chronologically before any other book in the Honorverse series, they can be read before any other books.

I should have noted that "Honorverse" relates to any and everything in the Honor Harrington universe. Which includes the Honor Harrington books, and various offshoots like the Honorverse: Wages of Sin series, and the Honorverse: Saganami series.

Hi Rion! We read Books 1 and 2 of the Stephanie Harrington series as group reads over the past year. If you can find the original short-story by David Weber, it will catch you up enough on Book 1 not to be hopelessly lost.

These are prequel series to the Honorverse so you don't need to get into that world if you don't want.
