Jess | 55 comments It took me a really long time to find a book I had been assigned and not read. I read almost everything I was assigned in high school and graduate school, and while the same wasn't true for undergraduate, I have already forgotten and sold/given away the books I ignored due to lack of interest.

I did, however, find this book. Assigned by my favorite faculty in graduate school. In its plastic.

I'm about halfway through, and blown away by the immediacy of this book. It isn't a book for everyone - it's classified "experimental" for a reason, so if you need old fashioned things like characters or traditional grammar, this isn't for you. I would really classify this book as long format poetry, and as such, it's beautiful and haunting, and says something about the experience of being an outsider, of being subject to the forces of war and history that I've never felt as acutely when told in a more traditional memoir or novel format.
