Heather Any recs? I'm having a hard time with this one.

Sheally (sheallyt) | 67 comments That will be tough because the YA genre is categorized as such due to the characters or at least main character being under age. But there is Good-bye Mr. Chips and Up the Down Staircase. Both about a high school teacher.

Stephanie (shynotebooks) | 73 comments a goodreads list suggested The Time Traveler's Wife. that doesn't seem YA

Nicole (aggie44) | 79 comments Really wasn't set in high school either, though. I guess she's in HS for part of it, but :/

Stephanie (shynotebooks) | 73 comments yeah, this is a toughie. would you rather read like...a more mature YA or something like that instead? what are you looking for?

message 6: by Heather (new)

Heather I tried the Time Traveler's Wife a few years ago. Hated it with a fiery passion. lol.
I'll try to hunt down Mr. Chips, but that might be hard.
Stephanie, I *might* be into a mature YA, but honestly if it's set in a HS I can't imagine how mature it could be.
I'm really look for anything that isn't YA or romance-based. Fiction or non-fiction.

Sheally (sheallyt) | 67 comments You don't like YA? Hmmmm! These are YA adult, but well worth the read. 13 Reasons Why is great. I've heard amazing things about the new book Crossover by Kwame Alexander. I'm 50 years old and I love YA. I do hate the silly, sappy love stories though.

Heather I read a lot of YA a few years ago and kinda got burned out. Maybe one day I'll get back into it, but not yet.

I noticed on your want to read list is A Tale for the Time Being. I have not read this, but this looks like it would qualify.

Oohh. Thanks. I'll check it out.

Athol-mary | 11 comments A Tale for the Time Being is a great choice. And not YA

I used "Anne of Windy Poplars" for mine. It's the 4th book in the Anne of Green Gables series. Anne is a teacher in the girls school during this book. However, I only recommend this book if you read the entire Anne series (which I powered through on audio earlier this year)

Heather hehe I remember that movie. I don't think I can fudge the other three books into categories, though. But who knows. I'm seven books ahead of schedule, so I might just read them anyway. I've always wanted to.

If you do read Anne of Windy Poplars, don't expect it to be that great. There are 8 Anne books in total, and I thought 4 of them were worth 5 stars and the other 4 were only okay (and this was one of the only okay books) However, the one before this one (Anne of the Island) and the one after this one (Anne's House of Dreams) were phenomenal.

You might also try A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Only a little bit of it is in High School, it's a coming of age novel but not YA (the novel predates YA as a genre, bt does feel adult.) Bonnie may have hit on something, I'm sure there are memoirs of teachers or books about high school teachers out there that are not YA!

I used A Tree Grows in Brooklyn for my "Book that was turned into a movie". ^_^ It was the first book I read this year.

lol Yes. A very old one. I watched it over and over again when I was a kid. The book includes a lot more, of course, but the movie was sweet.

Heather I ended up reading Anne of Windy Poplars. Thanks all.
