Ann (annrumsey) | 16928 comments It is almost release date for this highly anticipated book.
I am going to be listening to it on audio and look forward to discussions about it as we each find a copy to read. It is a very popular book at my library and I am hoping I can snag a hardback copy from the Lucky Day shelf. So what do you think, will we all love it? The sophomore book is always a question.... though we usually don't wait so long. To Kill a Mockingbird was first published in 1960

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9484 comments I have to use an Audible credit by the 12th so maybe I'll use it for this one, as I'm sure I'm still nowhere near getting it from the library.

but Sherry, you'd have our discussion threads to remind you of the plot! and provide you with all sorts of brilliant realizations to dazzle your F2F group with, LOL.

Dawn | 1371 comments I'm thinking I might have to splurge and buy this on my kindle when it comes out, although I got my name on the library list very early.

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9484 comments Yikes. This mild spoiler appeared in the headlines of a review in the Boston Globe online today. C'mon, people!

not looking , not looking, not looking. :)

message 9: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16928 comments That is me too Sherry, I am rethinking my original plan to listen to the Candice Bergen autobiography first...
I don't want to know anything about it when I read it, even what people think of it. Unrealistic perhaps.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16928 comments Carol: Most likely non-readers who don't understand the power of figuring out a book all by yourself!

Amy | 1346 comments Last night on PBS was a program about Harper Lee. It was very interesting.

message 12: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16928 comments Thanks for the tip about the program, Amy!
I found American Masters Harper Lee: American Masters #2504
- See more at: http://pw.myersinfosys.com/wnpt/searc... on my local PBS channel.

well, even though i didn't want to look, it was pretty hard to avoid hearing about it. it's been all over the news and facebook. will be interesting to see how it plays out in the book.

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9484 comments I'm 99 hold on 83 copies. I may go ahead and get it from audible so I can read along with the first wave here and then have the print copy to reference when it comes in.

message 18: by Carol/Bonadie (new)

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9484 comments OK, I downloaded it.

Can someone remind me whether this book was authorized for publishing by Harper Lee? I'm afraid to go searching for background in case I stumble across plot points for the book.

Dawn | 1371 comments The library came through for me! Started it tonight!

message 20: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16928 comments Not clear, Carol! If she did, it was a 360 degree turnaround. Neither Nelle (Harper) Lee or her sister Alice ever indicated there was a book to be published while Alice was alive or while Nelle was mentally 100%.
Alice actively protected her sister from pressures to publish.

Hope you enjoyed the ride!

message 24: by BarryP (new)

BarryP (barrypz) | 3498 comments The ride was great. Only one day of rain, and the people in Canada were as friendly as you might find anywhere. Actually, the same was true on this side of the border. We were out there 8 days, about 350 miles a day of secondary roads, roadside diners (we only ate local, not chains) and little mom and pop inns for the night. What a great way to decompress from the work a day world.
Next year we are looking at Nova Scottia in Canada, or Tennessee-Arkansas. I am thinking the southern choice would be the better one, if I can get away from work.

message 25: by Carol/Bonadie (new)

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9484 comments Sounds like fun. I have a local friend who is a biker, and he really treasures his weekend jaunts with his "gang."

Ann (annrumsey) | 16928 comments Tennessee Arkansas sounds fun, Barry! We might be a bit warmer though! The heat index this weekend is 103-107 (eek) Its the humidity.

message 27: by BarryP (new)

BarryP (barrypz) | 3498 comments Southern rides are in the Spring, Northern rides in the Summer. We had a couple mornings start in the 40s. When one Inn owner complained it was 33 degrees the day before, we were amazed at how cold it was, but she was really telling us it got hot, since Canada is metric. I am much better at converting now.

BarryP (barrypz) | 3498 comments NY Times article. Like the others, cannot resist minor spoilers.

message 29: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16928 comments Thanks, Barry! That is why I knew I had to read it right away. I can understand "non-reader" media leaking spoilers, in book reviews I simply do not understand.

message 30: by Carol/Bonadie (new)

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9484 comments Thanks, Barry. This is the first article I've read on Go Set a Watchman, and now that I've finished the book I can stand to read it and others. In fact I'm interested to hear how people have responded to specific plot points. But I too am disappointed that reputable reviewers couldn't resist announcing plot points in headlines instead of burying them in the text of their articles, positioned solidly behind "spoiler alert" phrasings.

Barry, glad you enjoyed your road trip. I sure miss those days. You did exactly the type of trip I used to take, local mom and pop places, meeting other people and just enjoying the wind in your face without a roof or doors.

Kirsten (kmcripn) I finished this book in August 2016. It's not as good as the first book and I'm glad Harper Lee was forced to split the 2 books apart. This book made me angry and it made me cry.
