Timbabwe Sz When I meet a prominent writer, I ask them to autograph whatever book I happen to be carrying. Mr. Keillor recognized my book The Moviegoer.

"Hmmm...Walker Percy...New Orleans...soul-searching...He lived in a suburb, not New Orleans proper, right? [The book is set in Gentilly, to the north of N.O.]."

I told him I'd seen the opera WISE BLOOD this month and was re-reading my southern lit. He recommended Harry Crew's "A Childhood, the Biography of a Place". "Terrible, hardscrabble life." Might have to use InterLibrary Loan for that one.

Now I have this addition to my collection of mis-autographed books.
Gravity's Rainbow, signed by Wavy Gravy at a National Marijuana Day rally in NYC in the seventies.

I once saw Tom Wolfe at a signing for his Stoic novel "A Man in Full", a $35 doorstop of a book.
I had Hugh Kenner's "The Counterfeiters: An Historical Comedy" in my pocket.
He glared at me, then thought for a second and signed the title page:

"Tom Wolfe
is a great writer.

Hugh Kenner"
An autograph -- and a forgery -- all in one.
