Laurie | 16 comments I often thought, if I was to choose an actor to play Special Agent Pendergast, who would look like him. Recently, I thought of the actor, Neal McDonough, on TV's Desperate Housewives right now, because he has that albino look, with his pale hair and pale blue eyes. But he does not have the tall, thin physical features that Pendergast has. So I guess he's not working for me.

Pranav Mehta | 7 comments Can't really think of any actor maybe Aaron Carter but Pendergast would have to look like

-Dante from DMC

or

-Leon Kennedy from RE4

Tell me if you agree with me :)

Laurie | 16 comments Well, the description that Preston/Child's gives him is of having his hair combed straight back, no bangs. In "Relic" (pg.82) D'Agosta says. . . "You aren't by chance related to Andy Warhol, are you?" So maybe that's what the writers have in mind.

Somehow, I don't picture Pendergast as that ugly.

I think it would be very doable to get Paul Bettany ( http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0079273/ ) to play the part. He was a more than passable albino in the DaVinci code and he has the thin look, maybe not quite tall enough though.

BTW was Pendergast even in the movie version of Relic?

message 5: by Laurie (new)

Laurie | 16 comments Yeah, maybe Paul Bettany would work. Grow his hair longer and slick it back. I never saw the movie Relic but I found that the Pendergast character was not even in the film. Imagine that.

I did some research online and found this:

"What about movie adaptations? We had The Relic and that’s it. Is there any movement to get these books on the screen?

That’s a very good question. Unfortunately, Pendergast is owned by Paramount Pictures. Even though he didn’t appear in The Relic, when they bought the novel, they bought the character rights. So the only one who can make a Pendergast movie is Paramount, which has had a chilling effect on any progress. The people at Paramount haven’t been paying attention. It’s a huge bureaucracy out there and most of Hollywood doesn’t read books, but until someone there says, “Oh, these books are great! Oh, we own this character?,” it won’t happen.

However, we finally have a producer who’s a really smart guy – and actually reads books – who wants to get Pendergast on the screen. He wants to make a movie of Still Life with Crows. And he’s a high-level producer and he went to Paramount and said, “If I come up with a good Pendergast project and you can be fairly compensated, will you let me have the character?” And Paramount said yes. So he’s been working on it for about a year, and we’re very hopeful.

And 20th Century Fox has had Riptide under option for ten years now. We get a check from them every year, but I don’t know what they’re doing with it. I do know they’ve already spent $3 million on script development. They were having a problem coming up with an ending. They didn’t like our ending because they thought it was too over the top. So they came with their own that I thought was even more over the top, and that’s cool, because movies are supposed to be over the top. And we said, “Hey, we’ll come up with an ending for you,” and they said, “Oh, no. There’s a rule: Never let the writers work on the script. Never.”

Pranav Mehta | 7 comments Riptide is just amazing...
Any idea when DP,LC are coming up with Beyond Ice Limit?

message 7: by Laurie (new)

Laurie | 16 comments Don't know. Cemetery Dance is to release May 12 though. Riptide was the first Preston/Child book I read. Couldn't put it down till I was finished.

I honestly think that was just an "Easter Egg" or a tongue in cheek joke. I don't think they are going to write Beyond The Ice Limit. Maybe Smithback will though

message 9: by Pranav Mehta (new)

Pranav Mehta | 7 comments They have mentioned about coming up with Beyond ice Limit more than just once in their interviews.
According to what they have to say, they are running
short of time to come up with beyond Ice Limit but
I think they will give into fans demands.

message 10: by Laurie (new)

Laurie | 16 comments I haven't read Ice Limit yet so I am not qualified to say how good it is. but I do have it on my shelf. If they do come out with a sequal, then another to add to my shelf.

message 11: by Laurin (new)

Laurin (scylla) | 2 comments I agree that Paul Bettany would make an excellent Pendergast. I think David Caruso would make an equally excellent Diogenes.

message 12: by Shane (last edited Jul 25, 2009 06:50PM) (new)

Shane (themre) | 3 comments I read that Andy Warhol reference just recently myself and have a hard time picturing Aloysius as that wimpy. As far as actors go I was thinking maybe Crispin Glover with his hair and eyebrows and lashes died light blond, almost white. He tends to play bad guys these days but I bet he could pull off Pendergast.

message 13: by Miriam B. (new)

Miriam B. Sayer (sleepwalker23) | 4 comments I've always thought actor Julian Sands would've been a brilliant Pendergast, except he's getting a little old now.

message 14: by Laurie (new)

Laurie | 16 comments Julian Sands. That could work. He's got the thin look. Maybe make his hair much lighter. But his eyes aren't albino enough looking.

message 15: by Shane (new)

Shane (themre) | 3 comments Daniel Craig, the new James Bond maybe? Lighten the hair and skin a little. He could pull off the "bada$$" part better than most; the military specialist that Pendergast is.

You're so right.

message 18: by Robert (new)

Robert Darrell | 3 comments Really though, if they make a Still Life With Crows movie I will crap my pants!!! That is by far my favorite Pendergast novel and I would hope they would do right by it. I Love Pendergast

message 19: by Beatriz (new)

Beatriz (nebula61) | 1 comments How about Bill Nighy, the English actor? Too old?

Maybe when he was younger...

message 20: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Donovan | 16 comments Johnny Depp - I think he'd be great.

message 21: by Al (new)

Al (oznob) A couple of years ago I think John Lithgow would have been an excellent choice for Pendergrast... Right now I am not sure. Johnny Depp has done some great work but based on the physical requirements for the part I would prefer a taller actor...

message 22: by Laurie (new)

Laurie | 16 comments I'm sorry, although Johnny Depp is very cute, he doesn't look anything like Pendergast.

message 23: by Al (new)

Al (oznob) Agree with Laurie...

message 24: by Laurie (new)

Laurie | 16 comments Actually, I was just thinking that Tim Gunn (from Project Runway) might look a little like Pendergast. He's got that blonde, slicked-back hair. But I don't think he would play the part very well.

message 25: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Donovan | 16 comments Dear Laurie, Johnny Depp is so versatile and with blond hair, slicked back, I still think he would be a great Pendergast, even though he is so handsome. I think of Pendergast as very handsome. The greatest thing about reading, rather than movies or TV is that one's imagination can go wild. I think that's why books will never go out of style. p.s. I'm trying to cast Diogenes in my mind now.

message 26: by Kim (new)

Kim | 1 comments In movies makeup artists can do anything. Johnny Depp has my vote. BTW most male actors are shorter then they appear on screen. And as far as dark haired actors going blonde what about Tom Cruise as Lestat in Interview with a Vampire.

message 27: by Blackrrp (new)

Blackrrp | 1 comments although Paul Bettany would be a great choice, i can't help thiking that Jude Law could pull quite a convincing Pendergast.
http://image.mcomet.com/uploadFile/20...
given the right hair color and attitude, he could be the mysterious and brilliant aloysius we're all fascinated with.

message 28: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Donovan | 16 comments A new query: who would play Diogenes (and I don't think David Caruso would be right-sorry, Laurin). And how about Constance, Proctor and the dear departed Smithback. Heck, let's cast the whole film, just for fun.

message 29: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) | 12 comments I think Johnny Depp has the perfect attitude and confidence to play Pendergast. He could make it believable. I always pictured Anne Hathaway as Constance. Must be the doe eyes. What about Paul Bettany for Diogenes? He does a good "creepy:.

message 30: by Yana (new)

Yana | 1 comments I would cast Damian Lewis as Pendergast (dye his hair blonde of course) and Paul Bettany as Diogenes. Or maybe even vice-versa. Damian Lewis was the perfect quirky cop on Life (NBC) and I think he could pull off a Pendergast with a lot of depth.

message 31: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Donovan | 16 comments Damian Lewis is very cute, but I'm still a Johnny Depp gal. I think Damian would be great as Diogenes, though.

Kate, I like Cary Elwes very much, but I'm still a Johnny Depp Gal. However, Vincent D'Onofrio would be spot on for Vinnie. What a great choice. In my opinion, Vincent D'Onofrio is very underrated and he has that great tough cop look. I've been wracking my brain about who could possibly play Wren, Nora Kelly and Procter. Any ideas about these three?

message 34: by Kate (last edited Jan 18, 2010 09:45AM) (new)

Kate (katekemp) | 6 comments For Proctor:
Just off the top of my head, Jason stathem (spelling?)??? I think he was in the transporter movie. He can play strong, silent & menacing without going over the top. Remember, Proctor isn't some subservient butler, at the end of one of the books (forget which one & don't have time to check) he drives off in a Hummer with a machine gun, hoping Diogenes would come after him. He also served with Pendergast in the military if I remember correctly.

I'll think on it more later.

Jen (mysterywriter19) | 4 comments how about Laurence Fox (from the Inspector Lewis series)?

message 39: by Darunia_haven (new)

Darunia_haven | 2 comments I also have a sick obsession with Pendergast..I'm more of a recent one...I would like to give a suggestion on who would play him...I HATE the Twilight sage...but ever since I saw Twilight and saw pictures...I think Peter Fascinelli would make an excellent Pendergast, when he looks like this:

http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/twi...

message 40: by Darunia_haven (new)

Darunia_haven | 2 comments also, in the movie and in other pictures, he is more albino looking that's why I believe he would make a good choice...also I picture Pendergast as being quite attractive...and Peter is when he is in Carlisle mode :)

message 41: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 4 comments Ralph Fiennes as Special Agent Pendergast and His brother Joseph Fiennes as Brother. Hair colored and practice a southern accent and the right camera angle. I think they can pull it off.

message 42: by Al (new)

Al (oznob) I think the Fiennes brothers might work out nicely... I really like Johnny Depp and I think he could pull it off, but I think the height thing would be an issue for me... 20 years ago I think that John Lithgow would have been the odds on favorite, but I think he is getting too old... But his height and range would have made him a good choice...

message 43: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Donovan | 16 comments Andrea wrote: "Ralph Fiennes as Special Agent Pendergast and His brother Joseph Fiennes as Brother. Hair colored and practice a southern accent and the right camera angle. I think they can pull it off."

Andrea, not bad.... Hmmm, I've been a Johnny Depp gal for quite a while now, but those two would be great. Handsome, debonair, etc., etc., etc. I'd like to see Liam Neeson as Proctor and who do you think could play Constance (and WREN?)? I'm interested in your opinions.

message 44: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) | 12 comments oooh, that's a great idea. I love the Fiennes. Good thinking andrea.

message 45: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 4 comments Hi Sandra

I think Keira Knightley would be a good Constance or Emily Blunt (Young Victoria) and Gwyneth Paltrow as Wren.

What do you think?

Sandra wrote: "Andrea wrote: "Ralph Fiennes as Special Agent Pendergast and His brother Joseph Fiennes as Brother. Hair colored and practice a southern accent and the right camera angle. I think they can pull ..."

message 46: by Darunia_Haven (new)

Darunia_Haven | 1 comments Fine then.....I do agree that my thoughts were rather stupid on the matter.....I definitely agree with Paul Bettany..he would make an excellent Pendergast...he seems normal enough

message 47: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Donovan | 16 comments Andrea, Keira Knightly has that delicate look and would be perfect as Constance. I'm not sure about Gwyneth as Wren, though. Now I'm working on Nora Kelly and (sadly departed) Bill Smithback. Also MIME! Who would play Mime?

message 48: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 4 comments I think Zooey Deschanel would be a very good Nora Kelly & David Krumholtz as Bill Smithback. How about Naomi Watts as Wren?

message 49: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Donovan | 16 comments Andrea, Zooey Deschamel would be perfect. I really like David Krumholtz, but I don't know about him as Bill. Naomi Watts would be a good Constance, too. It's so funny that each of us has such a different picture in our minds of the characters we read about. That's why I'd rather always read the book FIRST! When I was a child (I was born in 1940), we didn't have television, so listened to wonderful drama, mystery and comedy on the radio. It was such fun to make pictures in your mind about what was happening and who looked like what. Books rule!

message 50: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 4 comments The first story I heard was Hansel & Gretel, in spanish, by my mother, which was a story my mother un-fortunately could relate too. It’s a gothic story, more so in spanish.

Anyway, Wren, with a worldly look or stoic one. Maybe Sigourney Weaver or Juliette Binoche.

Yes, books definitely rule. I hope your having a nice weekend.
