Jason (ancatdubh2) Does anyone have any experience with In Search of Lost Time audiobooks? There seems to be a few different iterations on audible and possibly elsewhere, but I don't really know much about any of them and I have someone wondering about it.

i've been downloading a specific set of them, the new ones from Naxos. i think they are new? i can't remember. i haven't tried listening to them yet but i read really good things about them.

Marieke | 181 comments i'm having trouble with my audible app today and i'm really irritated.

Jason (ancatdubh2) Thanks, Marieke. Would it be possible to find me a link?

message 5: by Jason (new)

Jason (ancatdubh2) I wonder if any of these are Enright-revised?

Jason (ancatdubh2) But it looks like there are a few different narrators. If you scroll down, there's another version narrated by John Rowe, and yet another one even further down narrated by George Guidall. I agree, it would be nice to know which edition of the English translation these are based on.

Oh, and then on Page 2, there's a third narrator: Simon Vance. All three are marked "unabridged" but that seems to be the only information given.

Jason (ancatdubh2) Thanks!

Marieke | 181 comments Audible isn't good at providing information, especially about translations. But maybe a search on amazon will clarify things? I can't check right now but later if this question hasn't been resolved to everyone's (who's interested) satisfaction.

Since I'm reading the bookbooks I decided to collect the audio via audible for supplementary enjoyment. So i didnt worry too much about all the details. Also each recording is just one credit, which makes me happy.

Marieke | 181 comments Oh oops did you just resolve it, P.?

Aloha Since I get eye strain and reserve my eyesight for things that I can't do without using it, and I can't lay in bed all day reading, I pair audiobooks with eBooks, and use text-to-speech. I go into my eBook at the end of the day, reread passages, make notes and highlight.

The Naxos is terrific. To cut back on costs, it's best to get an Audible membership for 2 per month. You can cancel anytime. I use text-to-speech for forums that have gotten out of hand, too. So you all sound like a computer voice to me.

Marieke | 181 comments I was on the 2 per month before starting my ISOLT collection...pretty happy with it!

I'm trying to imagine my voice as a computer...

Aloha I have the whole NAXOS unabridged ISOLT and love it! The narrator Neville is wonderful with impeccable speech and French pronunciation. He seamlessly navigates between proper English speech and French passages.

The text-to-speech has gotten sophisticated, sounding like real people, even better than some people's speech. Remember how great the iPhone Suri sounds? Just like that. I love that I can cook dinner, highlight a forum into speech in my iPhone, then respond between simmering. It even correctly pronounces Kalliope's French passages, though the sound is muffled.

Marieke | 181 comments That's amazing. But I bet it can't pronounce my name. ;)

I had to teach Suri by misspelling my name a bunch of different ways until she got close enough.

So how do you do the text to speech? It's an app on your phone?

On another very different book, Bleak House, I am listening to the Audio version as well and it is fantastic.. the narrator changes voices for each character.. It makes me laugh out loud when he comes up with yet another voice... I can see I will become a fan..

I am also enjoying the Proust audio and the fact that there was a change of reader for the Noms du Pays section of the first volume, giving continuity with the second book, is perfect and it seems in agreement with Proust's original intentions.

The iPhone has a built in text-to-speech function that you can set to work. Yours should be able to do that, since you have Suri. I also have an app. by Speak It! in which you can purchase extra voices if you're not happy with the ones that came with the app. I have a dictation app., but the technology is not as good. Either that, or the problem is with my speech. :oD FYI, top robotics experts contributed to the development of the speech function, so it's not surprising that it's came a long way.

Until you tell me your name verbally, Marieke, I'll have to stick with the computer's mispronunciation. :o)

I'm sorry I can't squeeze in the Bleak House. That looks too intense considering that I'm doing the Proust. I'll have to give the audio a try later.

I'm debating whether to do the French in audio when I backtrack in the French.

I am enjoying the French audio tremendously.. it transports me to another world. My edition is quite expensive, but there is another one either for free or cheaper.. which someone posted somewhere around here.. Will look for it.. It will help your reading it in French.

Aloha Thank you, Kalliope, but I was quick to download it when somebody posted the link. I wonder whether Audible has the French edition that you have. I'll have to check.

message 20: by Aloha (new)

Aloha I was hoping to catch you, but the link would be good for others. Thank you!

The Spanish?.. will look for it for a friend who is looking for audiobooks in spanish and these are generally hard to find.. thank you.

Marieke | 181 comments Aloha--I'll experiment with text to speech with one of our discussion threads and let you know just how bad my name gets botched hahaha! Or I'll be surprised.

For the record my name is pronounced ma-ree-kuh or ma-ree-ka (more or less).

Thank you for the pronunciation, Marieke. I like your pronunciation better.
