Was there anything at all that you liked about Twilight?

Jordan (jords) | 2 comments I did like twilight, it was just the way Meyer portrayed vampires that annoyed me more than anything.

Thanks Kyle. Just to bring you up to speed....I consider this a "Sanctuary". A place for vampire fans to go without hearing "oh, I love Twilight, Stephenie Meyer is da best!". Twilight fans are welcome here, but that shit isn't.

Well, I was just a kid when I went to Boston. Got to see where "Cheers" was filmed. LOL. I just remember there being a lot going on there but I was so young. Perhaps I will come and see it again in my adult life.

Rick (rook916) I did like the fight sequence in this last one.... that's about it

Terri (terrilovescrows) | 8 comments I went to the Cheers place too back in the day. I LOVE Boston (except the biting cold at times)

Joanne Farley I did like the books and I have since often wondered why. In fact I wonder where the whole twilight mob thing came from. I agree with most things said here on why it is terrible but I still can't bring myself to hate it. Don't ask me why I have no real answer but I will continue to think on it.

I have to give it to Twilight that the books are a quick read despite how thick they are. I hated the book and the movies. The whole thing is total shit, I don't know what Meyer is doing but she's brainwashing people into liking her books.

No, it's not because it was written for a YA audience. I have no problem with YA books. I created three threads listing the problems I have with Twilight on here. I'll shrorten it for you...

1.) Bella is the most annoying "mary sue" character in the world.
2.) I wanted to punch Edward in the face
3.) Rest of the characters were like card board cut outs.
4.) The writing was horrible.
5.) SHE BUTCHERED VAMPIRE MYTHOLOGY...MY BIGGEST PROBLEM!!!!
6.) That's fairies that sparkle, not vampires.
7.) She butchered native american culture
8.) Vampires vs. Werewolves.....real original!!
9.) Watching someone sleep is not romantic, it's what STALKERS do!

Dalu | 10 comments Dan wrote: "Dalu wrote: "Dan wrote: "Dalu wrote: "i read the Twilight books so fast, i read each one in two days, i really enjoyed the books but not the movies"

well, i'd have to agree with most of the items exept i didnt hate the writing, that may be because i read it in spanish, i dunno that might chance something. I didnt care about Edward watching her sleep or him beeing overprotective, or sparkling but yeah the whole vampire mythology went to hell when all of this kind of vampire badboys/love triangle appeared.

Basically I loved vampires and monsters since I was a kid, and Twilight ruined it.

message 29: by Elke (new) - rated it 5 stars

Elke (misspider) I can relate to Dalu, I also enjoyed reading Twilight. It was indeed a fast read, which for me implies the writing was not too sophisticated in vocabulary and style. Though I dare say my english is not bad, every now and then I encounter a book which is a real challenge and reminds me it's not my native language (Kim Newman's Anno Dracula is a good example). With Twilight, that was definitely not the case, and I was able to rush through the pages.

Also, I did not care much for all the cozy Bella-Edward moments and the languor, but preferred the action.

But still, the trilogy was entertaining and I don't regret reading it, though today I would definitely lower my rating to 3-4 stars. But the wish to change my rating applies to other books as well. Regarded from a distance and in comparison to all other books I've read, some books lose or gain in importance.

Looking back, I also notice there was a phase when I was very much into vampire romance, when all those series started showing up and the idea was still fresh. But after a while I got really fed up with the genre and returned to vampire horror, though I still throw in some light reading every now and then.

Elke (misspider) Kyle ~Special K: Rebel Leader~ wrote: "...The Throat: Blue Rose Trilogy..."

I was not aware Peter Straub ever wrote a vampire book...just checked and found it is part of a trilogy. Do the other parts also involve vampires or is it only the last book? Should they be read in order or can I read The Throat as standalone?

Dan, the "butchering of the vampire mythology" was my biggest gripe. It's hard to enjoy ANYTHING about a book when you feel that the whole basis for the plot is simply WRONG.

Thanks Kimberly. The "butchering of vampire mythology" is my biggest gripe as well. I hate how whenever these you bring up the word "vampire" these days it automatically goes to Twilight. Really fucking hate that!!! I remember a time when "vampire" conjured up The Lost Boys, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dracula. What the hell?!?!

E.B. Hood (melabeth) | 67 comments As a writer I like the idea of changing vampires (within reason) but you have to acknowledge the mythology. You can't just ignore all of the lore. Still with that being said, I don’t mind rewrite on vampires, but can we really call Myers vampires… vampires? If you took away they liked blood (In the book she makes sound they can survive without, they just get grumpy.) If they didn’t drink blood nothing else about them would make you think vampire, more like alien. The worst part for me personally was the fact that humans had no fighting chance at all. They never slept they were made out diamonds or some shit like that. Without super strength you can't hurt them, wait there super fast too and cross don’t work. Sunlight's out, that may work in their advantage because your blinded by all the dam sparkling. I could go on forever, in short her books would have been good, if they would have been blood drinking aliens.

The lost boys---that's exactly the type of image that SHOULD be conjured up!! (Buffy was good, too...) There are so many "great" examples out there---I think that's why the whole Twilight saga sets me off so much. How could one (well, multiple...) piece of trash get so much recognition? It's like you read my mind, E.B.. They are not vampires. They are like some other kind of creature that just happens to drink blood.

@Kimberly. Yes, The Lost Boys. That is why I chose the images of David on the groups profile.

Jevron McCrory (jevronmccrory) | 28 comments I bought the first book when it first came out.

I'm a big suck head so 'a vampire book' I was on-board!

I honestly wanted to like it so much. I was on holiday in Spain so I was in a 'good place' to enjoy some literature....

Then she went on and on and on about how gorgeous Edward was. I was thinking :

'Fuck, this author needs to get laid!'

Then how fucking bland Bella is. I thought :

'Fuck, this heroine needs to get laid.'

Then it promised this big vampire smack down and then skipped straight over it, and I was like :

'Fuck, I need to get laid!'

Twilight - it's all one big promise and no fucking delivery whatsoever!

message 39: by E.B. (new) - rated it 5 stars

E.B. Hood (melabeth) | 67 comments What I like is this is the thread is, we are talking about what we liked. And it still sounds like a smack down. I can explain what people like about it. It's just like crack, without the pleasure of getting high. What keeps people hooked is the promise of something great, a romance, action, and danger. But what you end up with is, stalking, talk of action in some other place and time, and Edward making scary threats at Bella, which happens to get her all hot. (not hot enough to have sex.)

The worst part is… she calls these dear eaten SOB, Vampires. I happen to like mountain lions and bears, a lot more then criminals. If they really wanted to be good vampires they would have tossed there sparkling asses into the fire.

And if they would have done that, then we would have found something we all like about the books.

Dude that was great! Better then my summary of the book!

@ E.B. Yours is awesome too. They should just toss thier sparkling asses in the fire and save us all the trouble. Better yet....the author should do that!!!!!

Jevron McCrory (jevronmccrory) | 28 comments Okay, okay, one thing I liked.....

Hmmmm.....

Give me a minute......

I thought the first teaser poster for the movie was kinda cool, mysterious.....

Oh, that's not about the book, is it?

At least Stephanie Meyer can actually write flowing prose, unlike that talentless, middle-age, tart that wrote Fifty Shades of Whatever The Fuck. What an embarrassing 'impression' of writing! I was shocked at how badly written those books are.

Did you read them? I'm tired of hearing friends say, "oh, I read Fifty Shades of Grey. It's so good.". Yeah....right. Did you know that it was based off of Twilight fanfiction??

Angela | 56 comments About The Twilight Saga I liked the idea of a love story between a young girl and a vampire. I also liked the idea of a vampir character. Done correctly skinwalkers instead of werewolves would have been a very fresh and interesting idea. The books are long but sadly quite empty of substance.

message 45: by Angela (new)

Angela | 56 comments There is one other thing that I liked about The Twilight Saga. Stephenie Meyer did manage to use an interesting literary device, in the writing of the characters of Bella and Edward. She made Bella the boy and Edward the beauty. I remember when I was reading it, I kept thinking how reversed they were.

Mercedes (mudmule99) I didn't much care for the books. The first and second movie were good but I didn't like the rest. I loathe Fifty Shades of Grey, hate it with a passion. I don't see why it's so great and a best seller. The writing is awful. I think I feel about it the way some of you feel about Twilight. However...
bad writing or not, a unique take on her vampires or not, she's a known author and wealthy. I wish I came up with the idea.

Well I guess I can see how you would look at that last part like that. And Fifty Shades of Grey annoys me too. I can't say it's because of the writing because I've never nor would ever read the books, but I have heard it's horrible, I used to get annoyed when I would walk into Barnes & Noble and the books were everywhere, and most of all how fans would try to push the books on other people. Also it started out as Twilight fan-fiction. But getting back to that comment about Meyer being well known and wealthy...well that really doesn't mean much. I mean OJ Simpson was wealthy and well known and look what he did. Some people say that Charles Manson is actually a very good Musician and is even sitting on some money himself. Not to mention the assholes that were on "The Jersey Shore" and the fact that we all have to deal with The Kardashians almost everyday.
