I just finished Patrick Leigh Fermor's A Time of Gifts today. Previously I'd read his short book about traveling to monasteries in Europe.
Have any of you read him? He was a remarkable man - both learned and adventurous - who walked from Holland to Constantinople in 1933 with a volume of Horace in his bag (the first half of this journey is the subject of 'A Time of Gifts'). He's rumored to have translated a story by Wodehouse into Attic Greek...
