Ann (annrumsey) | 16929 comments I found this on the "new" AOL Message Board home page. We are not alone in our displeasure and sense of loss over our beloved MT board and the others.

I keep wanting to click over and see what has been posted on the board. At least we have Goodreads and Yahoo to keep connected. I guess I feel luckier than many people.

Ann, we are indeed lucky that we already had the Yahoo group in place so we could easily keep in touch. Thanks to Snap for setting that up in 2002 (!) when we had the first hints that AOL might abandon the boards.

And we're so very lucky that Cheryl was willing to jump right on the process of creating the board here. Thanks again, Cheryl!

Now if only all of our little ducks will find this pond.

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9484 comments Thanks, Ann. I will read this more when I have time. This is unbelievable still. I hope everyone makes it over here because I now have no interest in going back to AOL. What shoddy treatment of their customers. How far we have come from the days of the loving monthly emails from Steve Case.

NK15 | 34 comments I'm so glad you guys set up this GR board. I'm still learning how to use it, but at least there is a home to go to. I wasnt' part of your Yahoo site, but all three of my favorite boards found a spot here.

Carol (cabgal) | 1 comments Yeah! I found you with some help. This happened so suddenly, and I was not prepared. I mostly lurk but check often and depend on your suggestions.

Carol Cabgal, I'm so glad you found us. Your name is familiar but you're not on any of my lists--poster, lurker, or birthday. I'll rectify that immediately!

I posted for years on the divorce/custody type boards and as of now, to my knowledge, they have not migrated anywhere ..... I have known many of those people for 10 years! Some of us are e-mailing right now.

Susie Fevella (susieinks) | 1798 comments While I was on AOL checking my email, I thought I'd try the old link to our M/T board....and...it actually came up! There was nothing posted, so I'm not sure if it was a fluke, or if they are putting some boards back.

Wild horses could not drag me back to the AOL boards. There is too much good stuff here on Goodreads, and I won't reward bad behavior with my business or patronage.

I agree - this is much better aol.

Dan in AZ | 2960 comments Wild horses could not drag me back to the AOL boards..

Add my amen to that too. In another 10 years or so, AOL will be studied as an example of how to ruin a very successful enterprise, much the way Sony destroyed Beta. And remember, AOL was the first big provider and had a huge share of the business for a while. It's amazing how they've managed to drive it into the groud and alienate so many people. Dan/AZ

And one day I will proofread before I hit post. LOL That should read "much better than aol".

BarryP (barrypz) | 3498 comments My life online predates AOL by quite a bit. I was a Compuserve member when it was the only way to get quality files and advice. When AOL bought the failing Compuserve and positioned it as a budget provider, I was reminded to Achilles dragging Hector around Troy.

I was a Compuserve member also, and really liked it, don't remember how I transitioned off to AOL. And wasn't there something else, Prodigy or something with a "P"?

message 20: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16929 comments Double Amen to that.
AOL knew perfectly well how to send us email alerts if there was a delay in getting the boards back up and running. I am not interested in going back after spending almost two weeks getting settled over here.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16929 comments I am pretty sure I was on Compuserve and Delphi too in 1995. I know it was three different providers and I decided after the free trial of all three to stick with AOL, but can't really say why now. I know AOL was quite different in attitude towards customers back then.

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9484 comments Okay, I couldn't resist. I took a stroll down AOL memory lane. It was sort of sweet to see the folks gathering back together who have been shut out of AOL and now discover it is back, but they rightly are asking "will this last?" A couple of you have left "come on over!" emails, so hopefully anyone missing will find us.

I was on Prodigy starting in 1991 or 92. And I remember my dh and I being so excited when AOL started offering 20 hours a month for a flat rate. Except when he used some of my hours. We were each supposed to have 10. LOL!

message 24: by Ann (new)

Ann (theoann) | 50 comments BTW, I am back on the AOL boards for my Amazong RAce board. One of my other book boards never picked anywhere to move to, so they are back there.

Brakedrum | 1203 comments Brakedrum has arrived!!! After some gentle nagging from the group, decided to try it out. See how it goes, I just don't want alot of spam out of this. In 2003, I belonged to a motorcycle club that posted news on yahoo. I never received so much junk in email. Still trying to figure out how this place works.

I am informed when new posts are put up, but you can opt out of most e-mails.

Glad you're here.

BarryP (barrypz) | 3498 comments There were a surprising number of choices, Prodigy being one of them. My first big online service was Genie, which was run by General Electric with their excess bandwidth.
