message 12: by Becky (new)

Becky (beaktastic) | 86 comments Hello everyone, I'm Becky. I live in the UK and I love all things Fantasy (games, films, and books obviously!) I don't have any particular favourite genre of fantasy and I flit around from type to type a lot (and even from general genre to genre so not just fantasy!). My current favourite books/series are ASOIAF by George R. R. Martin, The Passage by Justin Cronin, The Dark Tower series by Stephen King and The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. (I can't choose just one!). I'm looking forward to participating in some group reads too! :)

message 13: by Nick (new)

Nick | 11 comments Hello everybody, I am Nick and from Allentown, PA USA. ASOIAF is also my favorite but I also like reading Brandon Sanderson, Joe Abercrombie, Scott Lynch, Brent Weeks, Patrick Rothfuss and a lot more. Right now I'm really into Sanderson's The Way of Kings, which I feel may grow to rival even ASOIAF.

message 17: by Gianluca (new)

Gianluca (gianlucag) Greetings ladies and gentlemen. I'm Johnny from Italy and I am really, really bad at introductions.
Anyways, Fantasy is my favorite genre of, well, pretty much everything. Books, movies, games, you name it. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy other genres, but Fantasy is always at the top of my list when it comes to entertainment.
I like all kinds of Fantasy, but Epic Fantasy is probably my absolute favorite. Oh, and I prefer long series. The longer the better. It's one of the reasons why I love The Wheel of Time.
My favorite authors right now are Brandon Sanderson, J.R.R. Tolkien, George R.R. Martin, Glen Cook, Robert Jordan, Patrick Rothfuss, Michael J. Sullivan and Jim Butcher. I've also enjoyed Stephen King's Dark Tower very much, but those are the only books of his I've read so far.
I'm currently reading The Blade Itself (The First Law #1).

Kristina (spaz_girl) Johnny wrote: "Greetings ladies and gentlemen. I'm Johnny from Italy and I am really, really bad at introductions..."

Welcome Johnny!
I am terrible at introductions too, if you notice, I didn't really give one myself. >_< It could just be that I am open to just about any genre of anything. If you take a glance at my currently reading shelf for example, I am reading 7 books; A memoir, an 2 epic fantasies, 2 books about writing, a mystery/suspense, and Harry Potter.
Anyways, welcome and I look forward to discussing fantasy books with you! =)

message 19: by Gianluca (new)

Gianluca (gianlucag) Glad I'm not the only one then! I usually avoid the Introduction Thread whenever I join a new group for this very reason.
Thank you kindly, ma'am, and enjoy your books. I quite liked Harry Potter.

Thank you, sir.
Well, I'm not far in it yet. So far, I'd say it's intriguing. It didn't grab my interest from the very beginning, like some other books did, but that doesn't mean anything. Not many books work that way.
I can see that the story is starting to pick up speed, so I'm excited to read more. I'm on West's first PoV chapter.

Haha, I am a huge Potter fan. This is about my 5th or 6th time through. This reading is the first time I am reading it out loud to my 6 year old though, so it is a very special reading. =)

Oh, good to hear! It's going to be a fun experience for both of you, I'm sure. Our teacher read it to us students when I was in Elementary School. Only the first one though. I read the rest of them (and the first one a second time) several years later on my own and in English, and I enjoyed it even more.

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi everybody! I too 'dislike' introduction threads. Reminds me of the first day in school when the teacher would make you stand up in front of the class and say your name and something about yourself... Well, my name is Traci. And I'm a reader. I read a little of everything but mostly books with fantasy elements which also includes plenty of horror.
I was looking for a group to read fantasy with - books I have and have not read - and this seemed like a good fit. Looking forward to reading with you all.
:)

Galea Rain (httpwwwgoodreadscomgalearain) | 4 comments Hi everyone. My name is Tasha, a.k.a Galea Rain. I am a huge fan of fantasy as well as a fantasy author, among other genres. Still a new author though so I haven't got the fanbase build up or enough books to be very known. Hoping to change that.
I'm already a part of a sci-fi/fantasy bookclub at my local library but I am always looking for more books to read and review for my blog.

message 28: by James (new)

James (justameeple) Hello everyone! My name is James, I am a massive fantasy fan, I would like to call myself an author one day as I am still in school, only just started writing my first book, hope to find some great new books to read :)

Can't wait to start reading books with you all in a week!

message 30: by Joe (new)

Joe (exxon25) | 6 comments Hello group members,
My name is Joe and I am fairly new to the fantasy genre (and to goodreads). I love to read books of all sorts, but I have definitely been addicted to Fantasy now that I have discovered it. I started when a colleague reccomended A Song of Ice and Fire which I promptly tore through in about 1 week! I think some of the best creative writing happening today is in the Fantasy genre. My favorite series so far have been: A Song of Ice and Fire, The Kingkiller Chronicle, The Demon Cycle and The Night Angel Triology. I am definitely looking forward to discovering some great new books to read and discussing with other fantasy fans.

message 34: by Drucilla (new)

Drucilla (faintlymacabre) hello, all! my name is drucilla and i'm from kentucky. i read a little mix of everything, but fantasy is definitely my favorite genre. i'm slowly getting through martin's asoiaf series right now. i'm a huge fan of tolkien, rowling, gaiman, and c.s. lewis, as well as books written for younger audiences (in the vein of "the phantom tollbooth"). anyway, i've always wanted to be a part of a book club, and this one seems to cater perfectly to my interests! you all seem like very lovely people, as well, who will hopefully motivate me to read more than i currently do. i look forward to getting to know you all!

message 36: by Scott (new)

Scott (dodger1379) | 5 comments Hi everyone - I'm Scott and I'm a reading fanatic. I usually have three or more books going at once. I switch between Epic fantasy, Mystery (think Agatha Christie style or noir) and YA (I have a 9 and 12 year old and I'm married to a teacher).

Currently reading The Deed of Paksenarrion.
Looking forward to the discussion and looking forward to recommendations. I lean towards the classic epic/high fantasy types such as
Tolkien
Hobb
J.V. Jones
Feist (earlier work)
Eddings (earlier work)
Tad Williams (earlier work)

Not a big fan of (and for different reasons )Jordan, Martin or Abercrombie (I know I know they're great...just not what I like)

Welcome Scott. I am the same way, I always have at least 5 books going and I read anything. I am going through a definite fantasy phase, but I also love romance novels, YA, history, memoir, really... anything. I am a fan of the older authors (ie Piers Anthony, Isaac Asimov), newer authors (ie George RR Martin, Peter V. Brett), and the classics (not just in fantasy). I look forward to chatting about books with you!

Welcome Scott its ok if you done like Martin and Abercrombie, its seems like you just don't kike gritty fantasy(is that correct?) that's whats popular more these days. I am huge fan of gritty fantasy. I am not into many the classic high fantasy because I have not read any of the authors you mentioned except Hobb. I am hoping to give some of these authors a try especially feist and Williams. Really looking forward ot discussing books with you!

message 39: by Frank (new)

Frank Hintz Hi, I'm Frank, and I have an addiction . to reading.

Oh wait, this isn't Bookaholics Anonymous?

Truth be told, my real addiction is story telling in any format, and I must admit, my reading is much slower than it used to be, so I'm not sure how well I'll keep up, but I figured I'd give it a go.

The best fantasy series I ever read was "Crown of Stars" by Kate Elliott and I'm sad it hasn't been mentioned in any threads here yet. I would also give praise to "The Sun Sword" series by Michelle West (who also writes as Michelle Sagara). In the longer ago, the various series that got me into the fantasy genre were The Chronicles of Prydain, Lord of the Rings, the Chronicles of Narnia, Amber, Raymond Feist's first series, David Eddings' first series, and the Elric series, and the Lone Wolf choose your own adventure books, as well as playing RPGs and such.
