Charlotte | 84 comments Hello all, as moderator I have striven to get our group active. I have been moderately successful, but need all of you to tell me how I might improve our site.
The response to our contest has been less than lukewarm. I am puzzled, as I know many of you are interested in FSF & few have the book offered. Before I ask any more publishers to give us books to include for future contests, I really need to know if this is of any interest to you. Perhaps you could suggest specific titles.
Any suggestions about improving our group will be most appreciated. If you would be so kind as to tell me why you joined us & what you expect to get from your membership, it would help a lot.

Richard (rstartari) | 2 comments Hi Charlotte. Many thanks for your all your efforts to re-energise the group. Living in Australia, I just assume competitions are just for American readers. Which could be a mistaken belief on my behalf!

Charlotte | 84 comments Nope, Richard. The contests on our group site are for all. I will personally mail them out, No worries, mate!
Thanks for the encouragement.

Amanda Gardner | 5 comments I'm glad to hear that! I'm in Spain and was wondering the same thing. Now, for an interesting comment...

Courtenay I got this LG bibliography on the advice of someone in this group. There are a lot of authors and works I have never read (or even heard of). My LG experience is really limited to Hemingway and Fitzgerald, and my love of Paris. Maybe a book club could be a suggestion-- an author that is part of LG but maybe not as well known? Americans in Paris, 1900-1930: A Selected, Annotated Bibliography

Barbara | 22 comments Hi I just joined this group. I'm not clear on what the contests entail and couldn't find anything that referred to any previous ones. Can someone fill me in? Looking forward to learning and sharing with all of you.

Thanks,
Barbara

Charlotte | 84 comments Welcome Barbara!
This is the first contest. I was planning on
having them regularly, but there has been little
response, so this will be it-first & last.
Please do enter.

Charlotte

Barbara | 22 comments Thank you Charlotte. Yes I did enter yesterday. Just a note, I posted a link to Amazon's kindle page with Hemingway, Fitz, and other great books which are on sale today only for $1.99. I picked up Hemingway's complete short stories..

Charlotte | 84 comments Courtenay, sorry to be so late in responding; been traveling. I LOVE that idea for a book club. Surely we all know of at least one obscure book on the times which we could share. I saw a copy of the great one you mention years ago. As I recall it was horifically expensive then, so I got it from inter-library loan.
Will you share your further ideas for the book club idea?
I got a book called "Paris Pilgrims" by Clancy Carlile while I was away. I really disliked the book for two reasons. First, I found a lot of mis-information in it & second, which is due to my own personal bias of books written with some factual information & some fiction. I feel it gives the author reason to present the subject shoddily, as was done here, without having to stick to the facts.

Courtenay I don't know much about book clubs-- I am a math-minded person and feel slightly overwhelmed discussing books. But I can make an exception, as long as everyone is kind!
I thought someone can pick a book, and then have a deadline to have it read by and then start a thread about that book only and people who have read it can comment? Maybe we can rotate who picks a book every cycle?
Like I mentioned, my LG experience is really limited to Fitzgerald and Hemingway and my trips to Paris. Personally, I would really like to expand on that and think others might as well.
BTW- there are used copies of the bibliography on Amazon for $22.

Charlotte | 84 comments Ooh, I love this idea; brilliant! And I agree, kindness is a must. I'm in for either Fitzgerald or Hem. Since it's your idea, why don't you choose?

message 13: by Courtenay (new)

Courtenay Oh no! As far as Hemingway, I haven't read: A Farewell to Arms or For Whom the Bell Tolls or Manhattan Transfer
Gertrude Stein Three Lives
Ford Madox Ford (maybe the coolest name ever) Parade's End or The Good Soldier

Just suggestions.

message 14: by Courtenay (new)

Courtenay Uh oh user error above.
John dos Passos "Manhattan Tranfer" or "Three Soldiers"
Manhattan Transfer
Three Soldiers

message 15: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte | 84 comments Well, since I just bought a copy of "The Good Soldier", it gets my vote! I'm happy to read or re-read any of the others, though, esp. dos Passos "Manhattan Transfer".

message 16: by Courtenay (new)

Courtenay Okay, The Good Soldier it is! When do you want to have a deadline, and does anyone else want to join?
I am on vacation next week through 6/25/13, so I would prefer to have the deadline later in summer. No way I will get to it on vacation.

message 17: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte | 84 comments That's great for me. Any date later is best. This topic is open to everyone, so if anyone is interested they may post it here.
Hope you are off to Paris!

message 18: by Courtenay (new)

Courtenay I wish! No, but I will be in DC for a spell, so hoping to take commuter train out to Rockville and pay my respects to Scott and Zelda. Will post a pic if I get out there.

message 19: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte | 84 comments Oh, do please show us photos; never been there. Have a wonderful, safe trip, Courtenay.
