I'd never started a challenge through the GR function before, and it looks like it makes each person start a shelf specifically for the challenge. So I made one "50states" and added the books below to it. When the books are marked as "read", the challenge updates to reflect that I have finished 1 of 50...

Feel free to post what you've read here if you want to! I will be updating here as I read, but there's no need to post anything official for this one, it's kind of an ongoing challenge anyway. It's kind of nice to see which books other people are using, though.

I'm only 2/50. Most of what I read either takes place in some fantasyland or it doesn't actually name the state

I hate when they don't name the state! Even if it's a fake city, I like to know approximately where it is!

I loved I Hunt Killers and it's set in Lobo's Nod, a made up city in the south. I keep wanting to know WHERE in the south!

I know! I have read several books where I can figure out what part of the US it takes place in but it never actually says it! So frustrating

I'm 4/50. Ditto the fantasylands issue. I hate to say it because it was partly my idea, but challenge #17 isn't going to help much either! (Ok, there are some paranormal set in specific states, sure, but I think a lot of the mythologies are probably set elsewhere, or not specific).

Okay, I'm at 29/50 now. I'm trying to finish up the other 21 by the end of the year!

Wow - way to go - I have only like 5! Too many books set in other worlds or countries. Hope to have half done by the end of the year!!

I'm starting to think I"ll never get all 50. LOL.

I am reading a couple of books that don't fit right now though... My son was pushing me to read Ready Player One, and I'm listening to The Isle of Blood so it'll be a while before I add to my list again!

For some reason I keep picking books that are set in California. If this was a California challenge I'd be winning.

Angela - are you not counting Ready Player One because it is an adult book? Because it *is* also an Alex award book. And even if the bulk of the story is set in cyberspace, both the main character and the main antagonist are located in Columbus, Ohio, for a good chunk of the book. Just putting that out there.

I thought we could only use YA books.

But if the Alex award is for adult books recommended for teens, does that count? (I don't know, I'm asking. I also have no idea why it was published as adult instead of YA, just that it was.)

Oh probably. I didn't have a clue what the Alex award is. I don't generally pay attention to that sort of stuff. LOL.

I think I'm going to stick with the YA tag, since the time frame for this challenge is so long and there's lots of time to find an actual YA book for each state.
But truly, this challenge is for fun, so whatever you feel is appropriate!

But I'm excited cause I'm reading a book from a NEW state I don't have. Happy day!

On a side note, if anyone needs books that take place in Lousiana, I highly recommend the Chronicles of Nick series (four books, all in New Orleans).

Yes, my favorites so far are Second Chance Summer, The Mockingbirds and The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate.

I was most surprised by The Beet Fields: Memories of a Sixteenth Summer, and not necessarily in a good way! It had a lot of mature content which I just wasn't expecting. It was an odd book.

It's been an interesting challenge because some states have such a limited list of books. I've read outside of my comfort zone quite a bit, and that's a good thing! While I'm still reading plenty of dystopian books (my favorite!), I've read lots of realistic and historical fiction and am liking it.

This is very confusing to me. I read the challenge and Angela, it seemed you completed it on the first day. I was looking for suggested readings and just keep finding lists upon lists -- some filled, some not. Am I the only one confused?

I think everyone has their own style of doing this. I fill mine in as I find books that fit the states. Some people make a list before the challenge starts. In this folder there are book titles listed by state that you can use to find books to read.
