The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic discussion

It's been awhile since the movie was presented to public, but I have seen it first some days ago and I was disappointed at first, but thought it was a cute movie in the end.

What do you think? Is it comparable to the book?
And what are your favorite differences? What don't you like?

i hated it. they turned Luke into a weakling @_@

The movie showed how obsessed Becky was about shopping. Isla Fisher did a good job in capturing the essence of Becky. I liked the part in the book and also in the movie where she put her credit card in the freezer and went to get it out of the freezer and tried to turn that sucker loose. Now I wish they would make a film about her daughter becoming the next shopaholic, that book is hilarious.

The book was humorous and so was the movie. Although I believe that the book was better in some ways the movie was very enjoyable.

I think Isla Fisher was a great choice for the role too. And I love the books - - have read them all. But I really didn't enjoy the movie at all. I hated what they did with the story, and felt the script did not capture the essence of the book at all. Yuck. Boo. It did badly in theatres as well, so it can't have just been me.

It's too bad, though. I really like the idea of seeing the books come to life. And I agree, the last book was great - - the best so far for me - - so I would love to see it brought to the screen. But with the first one bombing so much I can't see it happen. :(

I've just watched the movie two days ago. I think it is quite refreshed my mind after my test. haha.
I read the book years ago, so I can't compare a lot between them. but I'm a little bit disappointed with Luke in the novie, I expected someone more gorgeous :(
the best part I love in the movie is when Becky is telling Luke and the assistant (am i right?) that she has been being stalked. "I've been stalked too... by a dog" i think it is very funny.

I didn't think the movie was very good at all. I saw it with a group of women and no one really liked it. Not all of them had read the books, but they sure didn't like the movie.

Becky is a character kind of like Stephanie Plum (from One For the Money, by Janet Evanovich) to me. Don't get me wrong, the are totally opposite in so many ways, but their characters are goofy and they are fun to read about. I am just wondering if they are just hard to portray in a movie and do it well. They are coming out with a movie for One For the Money, so I guess I will have to see how that one measures up compared to the books.

The Shopaholic movie did have some good scenes. But overall, I thought Becky was kind of obsessed. Every time she went past a shop window, the clothes were calling to her. Come on, get real.

Why is Becky in the movie not living in England?

I know I noticed that too. Maybe to make it more appealing to Americans? New York is the fashion capital of the world, I suppose.

It'll make it hard to do the next one - - Shopaholic Takes Manhattan! Lol...

I hated it! For me the most charming part about the books is the dry British humor. Moving Becky to New York removes that factor. Definitely a series of books that Hollywood should have left alone.

Maybe in Shopaholic Takes Manhattan, she will go to London. Maybe there are few places that resemble the United Kingdom, no where in the United States could they do the book or the movie justice.

I think that also, but the latest book from Sophie Kinsella, is a scream. You have got to read it.

It was brutal! If I had not read the book, and only watched the movie, I would have never read it! The director had been quoted as being a huge fan, well you would never know. It was nothing really like the book and I agree-it should have been a BRITISH actress!!!

I did not like the movie, couldn't even be bothered to watch it to the end, and that says a lot!

i love the movie as a comedy romantic movie not as addapted movie from ms. Sophie book ....
i love all series of shoppaholic... i love to wait to see them on screen.... 1 by 1 and flow just the ways book told... much scene on books i really want to see on screan from each book of this fantastic series....
it can as fenomenal as harry potter series... in diference genre...

I own it and it's definanlty one I watch when my brothers aren't home(chic flic nights ROCK!).

The film was good but a complete disgrace to Becky and Sophie Kinsella's writing. I watched the movie before I ready the books. I enjoyed the movie but the books are definitely completely different and waaaaay better. Sophie Kinsella is a great writer and I absolutely love everything she has written.

I had read the books first and I love them and then I saw the movie which on its own without any relation to the books would have been alright but because it was adapted I just think it spoiled it. I imagined Luke and Becky so much different.. I thought Becky was alright but i love her book character so much better.. And Luke someone said it earlier they almost killed him!

I love the book. however, it did not go well with the movie. the idea of changing the place from england to new york was not good. it changes everything for me. the characters, the setting and even the tiny details that says in the book. roles must be played by british actors since Becky is a british and everyone else in the book!
british humor really cracked me up and one of the reason why i love the book.

I didn't like the ending of the book because it was so empty and not what I was expecting. I was expecting everything to be resolved. But don't get me wrong the book was quite good.

I prefered the film over the book, because even though it missed out a few points it covered everything nicely. I loved the people who played the characters and I just enjoyed it more. (:

I thought the movie was okay, not great, the book was better. The person who portrayed Becky was an airhead, I don't know anyone who would go to such extremes in shopping, and also going into debt over it.

I was very disappointed, I wish they would have followed the story line better. If they would have, I think they could have continued making movies that Shopaholic fans would have loved.

I loved the book. Didn't liked the movie. Still humorous though. But if I haven't read the book, it could be a pretty good movie.

i read the book way before the movie was out.i enjoyed the movie but still i think the book version is better in so many ways.becky from the movie might be similar to the book version but i think luke brandon in the book is better,or should i say the best :D

If you liked this book then read Rescuing Rose by Isabel Wolff. I'm reading it now and it's fantastic. I think its better than this book.

As with most, the book was better. but, I found the movie entertaining. The lead character is very amusing. And the people that played her parents were too cute. :)

loved the book..hate the movie..thats not luke in that movie..he was suppose to be a bit more good looking.. and becky is british. thats the whole point.It was not worth watching

I didn't really like the movie the first time I saw it. I have read all of the Shopaholic books and I hate seeing my books turned into movies...somehow, something always gets lost in translation. But, after receiving the movie as a gift...it really grew on me. Isla Fisher really was the PERFECT Becky! I grew to appreciate the movie for what it was, cute & funny, and tried not to compare it to the book too much.

The movie was okay. Loved the book more. I like to visualize who the characters are and I would never have imagined Isla Fisher. Oh well, what do I know.

The movie version was funny in its own way. and Isla Fisher turned out to be a really cute becky! hihi :) but when i read shopaholic takes manhattan recently, i realized that the movie installment was somewhat joined together parts of the second book to the movie. but overall i'm a fan of chick flicks. :)

The whole shopaholic movie, based the character in New York, when she should have been in London. It would have been nice to see it based in London.

The movie was good. I'd watched the movie before I even started reading the book. Both were really good, but I agree with some of you. Even though the stories or scenes were different, it has its own charm. I loved it both <3
Btw, the actor/actress for me, also fitted the movie. :)

My words exactly! I especially thought the character of Luke was portrayed completely wrong and I missed all the little fun quirky comments from the book.

I loved the actors who played the main characters in the film. Luke was just right because he's a business-y type of person and Isla Fisher was absolutely brilliant.

love the book, one of my favourite. I don't really like the movie . But Isla really did a great job though.

I loved the books. They are absolutely hilarious! They made the movie suck trying to combine the first two books into one. If they would've concentrated only on the first book, it could've been better. Budget cuts are everywhere!

The movie was not true to the books. Without the books, the movie is a great, funny movie that stands by itself. But because I've read them all, the movie was a big disappointment.

I found the movies a disappointment as well. Why couldn't they base her character in London. I know New York is the fashion capitol of the world, but I wanted it to be in London.

The book was much, much better than the movie. However, I would still watch the movie in my free time if there was nothing else on without complaining and everything, but it could have been a whole lot better.
